Killer whale kills trainer in San Diego

I really don't have any sympathy for people that get mauled or killed while messing around with wild animals be it whales, tigers, bears, etc. Killer whales don't belong in a tank doing tricks. It is pure stupidity in my opinion.

I guess this same whale killed another a while back when some moron jumped into the tank. I agree though these animals deserve to be free in the ocean and not made to do tricks.

Not to make light of it, but Gabriel Iglesias has a bit in his show where he talks about Steve Irwin "Croiky, here's an 800lb tiger. He could kill me with one blow. I think I'm going to poke him with a stick...."

It isn't that I don't feel sympathy for this woman, but as the saying goes if you play with fire, you will eventually get burned. I used to like these shows when I was a kid, I agree with jeffs4gsmac that putting them in shows is foolish.

Agreed totally they should NOT be in shows and its on the trainer to get in there at their own risk.Just thought it was better than a political thread.:D

There's nothing more shameful or sad then a death that just did not have to happen. I just got home about 20 minutes ago and had the news on. This whale has been part of 3 incidents, 2 resulting in fatalities. If our dog were to bite someone who snuck up behind him, he'd be taken and likely be put to sleep... yet Shamu gets to stick around and tragically kill yet again.

Hindsight's 20/20, but c'mon.

it only takes 10 minutes of watching videos of killer whales in the wild hunting for prey to tell anyone to stay on land and a mile away from water.

I could be wrong but I don't recall ever hearing of a killer whale attack in the wild. Seems like they are smart enough to know we are not food. I can understand one getting pissed for being in tank though.

actually i was talking about how they attack/hunt seals. reading the human attack article (how he/she was tossed around) pretty much describes how the killer whale catches the seals :)

imagine being hit by a truck going full speed vertically, while at the same time being crushed and bit with giant pliers ... that's probably how violent the trainer's death was

i have this rule in life: if it can kill you ... don't play with it.

that includes big dogs, tigers, orangutans, chimpanzees, snakes, etc.

Yeah I know thats what you meant, but I was just wondering if anyone had heard of a attack on a human by a killer whale in the wild.

Their was a show documenting a group of whale watchers who got to witness a killer whale attack a great white shark. Pretty cool documentary.

Edit: Here it is.

"this video ... from national geographic, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds"

that sucks.

thanks for the info though, i'll look for it ... i've always wondered which would win.

edit:

I once had a nightmare, involving a killer whale, where in my sleep, I leaped out of bed, and not only did I land smack on the floor, I hit my head on the deskchair on the way down. True story, and I'm not going to share any more details about the nightmare so that I may not further embarrass myself.

I think the orcas might have the closest thing to man's hunting adaptability, as far as top-of-the-food-chain predators in the ocean go. Pestering and stealing from Mediterranean fishermen, beaching themselves to eat seals, whatever. They learn, and then teach their young what they've learned. IIRC, they develop their own dialects, too.

Beautiful and scary creatures!

Yeah, no doubt they are absolutely fascinating. Polar bears freakin amaze me too. Amazing animals for sure.

As far as what happened... Not to downplay it, but doesn't that kind of come with the territory? I have no problem with capturing/rescuing these animals for our entertainment, just don't gripe when they do what they do and hurt someone. That animal doesn't care at all that its not in the wild. No way he knows the difference, exactly why he killed again. Thats what they do. If you're gonna keep em in captivity just keep expecting this to happen.
