Soon to buy new Sub. Very large room; 8,500 cu ft. Can only afford one sub at this time. Movies - 98%, not much music. Not looking to shake the entire room; just want to compliment good action movies.

Currently looking at HSU VTF-3 Mk3 and SVS PB12-NSD.

Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Those are both great choices, but that is a LARGE room. You might want to consider two Hsu VTF-2s or two SVS PB10-NSDs. SVS periodically has B-Stock that is slightly coemetically flawed but acoustically perfect at discounted prices.

Good Luck and Good Sound!

In a room that size for just HT around the same budget as the HSU or SVS you can get an Epik dual 15" for $799. This is an introductory price as this sub just came out.

That's sort of 6 of one half dozen of the other. IMO, they are going to perform similarly in a room that size. Both will get you good, but probably not excellent, bass in a room that big, but that depends on what you consider "good". Either one would be a good place to start though.

Note that the PB-10 is not currently offered...

I would get the SVS, and then in the future add a second one.

I would suggest not going sealed in a room that size, you will need all the effortless output you can get....

I have a room just that size - to get good impactful bass in there you will need more then just that one sub. Some here will say I'm a bit goofy, but I have 3 x 18" sealed subs + 1 15" with ridiculous amount of power driving them.... its amazing.

My point is once you have had a taste of bass you will likely want more... At least a pair of ported subs like the HSU will only start to do that area justice. Also think towards installing the sub or subs near field (close to the seating) to get the most out of them.

If you can, you should try to make the stretch up to a Elemental Designs A5-350 or the Epik Empire. If you can't make that, I would go for the VTF3 and run it in max output mode, then get another one later and run them in max extension mode. You are going to need two of any of these subs to pressurize that space though.

I have owned both. As such, you might find this helpful:

Hope these links are useful. I must say, however, for a room that size (2) subs would be more ideal. Good luck in your decision. ;):);)

My room is about the same size as yours. My dual A2-300's from Elemental Designs push some serious LFE in my room. I am more than satisfied.

Thank you for all the replies. This group is very helpful without making a neophyte feel like an idiot. I purchased an Epik Empire; arrived yesterday. Will lug it into the family room (120 lbs) soon and see how things go.

Next project will be to upgrade a really ancient receiver.
Thank you again to all.

yes please let us know what you think. I was looking at the pb12 and the hsu vtf-2 MkIII and now epik goes and does a thing like this sale. What is a man to do with that. I just finished putting my credit card in a straight jacket and now they go inspire it to break free again and buy stuff....
