Is it just me or is this one of the worst quality Blu-Ray's I've ever seen? The movie itself is just fine, that's not the problem, but is there any reason I have to turn my Receiver up to +4db just to hear the subwoofer or feel like there's any dynamics to it whatsoever? Popped in Punisher right after, sub and reciever is not the problem, that movie sounds great. It's just lacking in that, and the picture itself looks like a DVD, there's nothing special to it. It's not very high Def at all. Even the colors aren't that stunning. I know space is dark and all, but a majority of the story takes place in hyper-white lit environments, but it doesn't look that way. People's faces aren't very defined, and it just seems like I'm watching a regular run-of-the-mill DVD. Again, poppedi n another BD after, picture was beautiful. What happened with this movie? Perhaps a bad disk? But I would think it just not play at all or skip rather than have bad sound and picture. It is by far the WORST quality BD I have ever watched.

There's plenty of good LFE in that movie. It is remotely possible most of the energy is below your sub's range. There are several scenes that go subsonic as well. PQ is actually outstanding. Maybe something is lacking in your system.

Do you know your subs FR?

I had no issues with picture or sound. However, the movie? I think the Hitler video summed it up nicely.

i can rewind and play the warp speed "boom" all day :)
That, and when they space jump into the atmosphere, that one makes a great boom.:) There's a scene when the Enterprise first comes out of warp near vulcan where there's some really good low stuff too.

I'm not a Star Trek fan but I thought the movie itself was pretty good...not great. On the other hand the picture quality was fantastic. Its not one of my favorite Blu-ray disks for audio though. There were some scenes (explosions) that you could definitely feel the bass but others felt underwhelming. Like others mentioned I would agree that the LFE is not mixed as hot as some other movies. My favorite audio part was the sounds of those guns near the end of the movie. Being a big Star Trek fan that I am, I have no idea what they are called.

As much as I am not a fan of this movie b/c of the weak story line, lame CGI, and too much Star Wars copycat crap, it has impressive sound and visuals. I will watch it once/year with friends and family as a result and simply bite my tongue on the stupid scenes which there are many of :(

No, I heard the subsonic boom part, that was great, especially the warp scenes. But the lacking was explosions, they just seemed so far away, no booms, no shaking, you know, like an explosion, lasers hitting a hull didn't shake, when ships crashed into eachother it was very dull. The sound of a ship crashing into another one, though there is no sound in space, should be more of a dramatic effect. Especially if they're going to make it have a sound in space, it should sound better. Also, the sound of a Corvette racing down a freeway was drab. Flooring the pedal on a car drags the engine out and it's loud! Not so, you can't hear the dust kick up very well either. My sub picks up some pretty low frequencies, but this movie was just, eh...

As far as picture quality, watch another BluRay after this, like Terminator Salvation, and look at people's faces, they look WAY better, and this movie is only what, a year old?

I haven't seen the Blu-Ray yet myself, but I thought your opinion went against the consensus of reviewers...yep:

Blu-Ray.com:
Audio: 5/5
Video: 5/5

High-def digest:
Audio: 4.5/5
Video: 4.5/5

The HD room:
Audio: 10/10
Video: 9.2/10

DVDtown
Audio: 9/10
Video: 9/10

DVDtalk:
Audio: 5/5
Video: 4.5/5

Clearly you think otherwise...beats me what's up.

Maybe it's your setup. I just got the movie and I must say after watching the Wrath of Kahn this movie compares favorably(transfer wise). I think nostalgia is the most logical reason for someone disliking the film. I found it to be better the second time around. Sure the science part of it is unbelievable, but there are elements of that in every scifi ever conceived including previous star trek iterations.

J. J. Abrams did a far better job than the writer of nemesis. Which is the worst tng movie IMO.

I personally enjoyed the video presentation and am glad someone learned about the light bulb again. Dark movies are just annoying.

This BD has a lot of LFE below 25Hz and even below 20Hz. I'm betting your sub isn't capable of reproducing those frequencies. Time for an upgrade :)

This one shook my whole house. Very dynamic audio track. I rewatched a few scenes just because of how good the audio was in this one.

Maybe it is my subwoofer?

But that doesn't make sense. Terminator Salvation has the whole house rattling off its screws and joists, but this movie, I had to turn it way up for anything.
I'm using a Denon DHT-589BA, that sub, and the entire Sony SS-F series.

I do think it was mastered a little on the soft side. Terminator Salvation on the other hand is a bit hot, but a great track too.

Did you buy your copy new at a store or used off the internet (as in could it be a bad pirate copy)?

What is the frequency response of your sub? Terminator Salvation is mostly LFE above 20Hz, not much subsonic stuff. Star Trek is not mastered that hot, so the LFE is not over done (so to speak), but it is there and some scenes really shake things well. Not sure if you were expecting a rumble fest.
