Panasonic Corp announced a PDP (plasma display panel) TV that can display three-dimensional (3D) images Feb 9, 2010.

The PDP TV, "3D Viera VT2," will hit the Japanese market April 23, 2010, along with a Blu-ray Disc (BD) recorder and a BD player that support 3D video.

"We will change the way people enjoy watching TVs," Panasonic said. "We would like to provide living rooms with a sensation of being dragged into a screen."

The 3D Viera VT2 comes in two screen sizes, 54 and 50 inches, and their expected street prices are ¥530,000 (approx US$5,895) and 430,000, respectively. The BD recorder will be available in three models whose HDDs (hard disk drive) have capacities of 2 Tbytes, 1 Tbyte and 750 Gbytes, respectively. Their expected street prices are ¥300,000, 200,000 and 160,000. The price of the BD player is expected to be about ¥130,000.

I think it will be a while before the whole 3d thing becomes mainstream. To me it still seems kinda gimmicky, and nobody wants to wear glasses all the time to see 3d, especially those who already wear glasses.

I'll PASS.
until the price points are comparable to today's 2D versions and there is good content at the correct price point, it will be nothing more than a gimic/technology to crow about. Let's face it, look at blu-ray. It's great, but at $30 to $40 a pop for regular price, it's damn hard to pay for disks. Oh that's right...people just pirate them off the internet instead of paying obscene prices.

The new Samsung 3D LCD display has an MSRP that is identical to last years non-3D version. The main requirement with 3D is the ability to accept and display a 120hz source properly, which is just coming to be possible, but IS possible. The premium on this capability is like the premium of buying a 120hz or 240hz display - which is, not much.

So, grab a 72" Vizio 3D display for $3,500 if you want to go really big on a budget, or get the new 55" Samsung for around $3,000 or so, then wear glasses when and if you want to.

I certainly will be considering 3D, and I expect that the projectors coming to market will be extremely price competitive to what is out this year already.
