i have to admit all the talk on here about how great they are is getting me interested. not that I need a blu-ray player.. but I'm reading all of your posts and well i want one too :)

so I'm looking on audiogon and stuff and this guy who lives in my area has one listed for 450.. so i offer him 375 with cash since he lives 10 minutes from me.. and he is like non negotiable on the price... and the crazy thing is i know he might actually get close to his price.. I see these things listed frequently for mid 4's

AM I missing something here? why buy used and only save 50 bucks??

is there gold hidden in there?

What is the price difference between that and one direct from Oppo or the AH store (I don't know if it's a current model)? If it's not significant, why buy used and not get a warranty, since they usually don't transfer to a second owner? If he gets his price, so be it. It's all supply and demand.

I agree, i dont see them used very often, but it seems like there should be a savings of more than $100 to make it worth while especially since AH sells it with free shipping and the extra warranty and lifetime tech support.. the one thing I like from oppo is the wireless bridge they have to connect it to the network, i didnt see that on AH.

I was just curious since it seems like they always get listed for close to the new selling price.

There are a number of wireless bridges out there, but their price is decent.

They are still basically pretty new, so they are going to get a price close to the full price still. Most of their models retain a fair chunk of their original price.

Do most people do the wireless bridge deal to connect to the net? does this make updating firmware easier and stuff?

Updating the firmware from a USB thumbdrive is pretty straight forward - all you have to do is put their files in a particular folder and insert it into the player. From the menu choose update from USB and it does it. I've done it 3 or 4 times without issue. The difference is, if you have it connected you can set it to tell you when new firmware is available.

thats kinda cool, although i have never really seemed to have to update my current blu ray.. seems liek all disks have worked fine.. is the 83 that much faster in loading the blu rays? and in your opinion is it worth it to go with the SE?

Yes, the Oppo is pretty much as fast as, if not faster than, the PS3 and the PS3 is considered by most to be the fastest loading player. Certain discs load quite a bit faster on the Oppo, such as Ratatoullie. I did mention in the Gamer thread that it would not play on my SE yesterday, while it played fine in my PS3. I have not updated my BD-60 and all discs seem to play on it fine too, but it is at my other place and I coudln't try Gamer.

If you are going to use HDMI there is no need for the SE. If you are going to use the multichannel analog outs and you listen to a lot of music then I'd go for the SE. I am about 50/50 music to movies, so the Oppo gets a lot of use.

From reading the Audioholics tests, the SE is only worth the extra money if you are using the analog connections for your audio. If you use the HDMI or other digital outputs, the SE is of no use to you. I believe OPPO even confirms this.

EDIT: too slow :(

Why should it be that much less? If it's in high enough demand as a used piece, it could very well go for more than new, but that status is usually reserved for long-discontinued classics and it's way too early for this to reach that level.

I am currently using analog outs on my blu ray since my preamp does not have HDMI and I do like the ability to play cd's although most of my music listening is through my apple TV though.

what is the SE $400 more? thats pretty steep

The standard 83 already sounds very good. If you don't want to spend the additional $400, I still don't think you'd be disappointed in the sound. It is a very good player (AH product of the year :) )

The price is simply what the market will bear. If he won't take $375, it either means he's not motivated to sell, or he can get more than that from someone else.

Price and Value are not the same thing. Don't mistake equating the two.

The player is worth to you what you are willing to pay for it, and not a cent more. Ideally this should be based on the value it represents to you, and not anyone else. If others will pay more, then that doesn't change the value it represents to you. A deal is always only between two parties. The other buyer is not part of the bargain, and his willingness to pay whatever is irrelevant.

Whatever that value is, in this case, will be based partly on what warranty rights as a second owner you will have, and your assessment of the risk that the warranty will be needed, versus the costs should you guess wrong.

The Price is what you have to pay to get one. If the value to you is less than the price, don't buy. if it's equal or more, then pull out the wallet.

as a sales guy I understand personal value and such. I understand my value and his can be different. I was asking the question to see if I was missing something as to why a used one would not equate a significant savings. I would say most of my equipment was purchased used and have saved alot of money doing so.. I also think of myself as somewhat of a savy consumer.

why would someone else pay 450 for something they can get for 500 brand new with warranty? is there a change they made to make the older ones better ?

so far i'm not seeing a value in buying this used.

Some people look at the cost in totality; ie if there is sales tax, shipping costs, etc.

The unit is right there, no waiting necessary, and is presumably a known good working unit. It's a small thing to most people, but that is not guaranteed if you buy a new unit.

Some people will fight for a $10 discount (as I'm sure you know). What motivates buyers is not consistent from person to person.

Personally, I would agree that this offer is not particularly good value. However, assuming you were willing to take certain risks (warranty) at $375, the question then becomes do you value the warranty more than you value the fifty bucks (assuming he simply won't budge on the price).

Some people will take the fifty bucks.

Again, since you are in the business, I'm sure you understand the dynamics of a deal. If you are not willing to walk from the deal, that usually means you have an emotional interest in the deal, rather than a detached objectivity, and you will tend to overpay.

HiFi can generate emotional attachments; perhaps the $50 off is not such a hot deal but some people might bite none the less, for the wrong reasons. It's just as likely that the seller has an emotional attachment to the player and is being unreasonable, to any buyer.

I'm pretty sure you and I are of the same mind here ... walk.

What was the guys address? I think he needs a visit from us Fanboys to set him straight.

he says he is upgrading to the SE
That is what I was going to say. Once the SE came out, there was actually a used market for the standard ones. I thought about that, but the upgrade from the standard is less than buying a new SE and I don't care if it says SPECIAL EDITION on the front panel as long as it does its job.

AH does not offer their free extended warranty with the 83. (the little "free" symbol with the badge is not present on the page for the 83)

The only place you can buy the unit and receive any kind of option for beyond the one-year warranty is through oppo's site. And then you have to fork out extra $$. :)
