I'm looking for some interesting new sounds (as somebody born in 77) and I'm hoping you guys can recommend your favorite albums from the 50s.

Heifetz does the most amazing performance of the Sibelius violin concerto you'll ever hear. RCA Red Seal, Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Recorded in 1959, I believe. Microphones weren't very good back in those days, so the sound is a bit funky by today's standards. But the performance is just out of this world.

I used to have that Heifetz recording, but I think I've lost it. :( I bought it for the Glazunov, which there didn't seem to be many recordings of.

I like this title, also from '59. :D

Any of the Miles Davis quintet sessions on Prestige. Davis-Coltrane-Chambers-Garland-Jones. Man, it couldn't be better than this.

I'm an old guy who was actually buying music in the '50s, but the music I liked when I was 14 or 15 isn't what I like today. My favorites in those days were things like Elvis, Duane Eddy, Bobby Darin, The Everly Brothers, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, and the do-wop groups of the late 50s. The 'remember when' shows think all us old farts still want to listen to that stuff for the rest of our lives. I've grown up, and my tastes have changed, so some of that '50s jazz is pretty good now...didn't appreciate it as a kid.;)

Good choice, the old DooWop groups were a favorite and still are, also like Masher says, Billie Holiday, and add Bessie Smith to that.

I have some old Holiday and Smith 78's in great shape...unfortnately nothing to play them on now..:(
