Felony charges? ... Seriously???

This story has been in the news and on the local talk shows recently and this kind of stuff makes me want to pull my hair out. To charge 14 year old kids with a felony and make them register as sex offenders is a horrible abuse of the justice system and isn't helping anyone. I listened to the prosecutor on a talk show and I just wanted to reach through the radio and slap some sense into him. Sending pictures like that is a stupid thing to do and I think they should get a talking too but this is seriously screwed up.

I am with you on this This isn't child pornography by adults but just the advent of life's evolution and the modern age. In the past, perhaps kids went behind bushes to show off to each other.
I guess some prosecutors need another notch in their conviction stick, or a show and tell to get re-elected.

ps. I guess new parents better not take pictures of their infants of young babies in the nude.

I dunno about this case. Sending photos of yourself to a friend is one thing.

That implies consent.

Sending photos of another without their consent (particularly an ex-girlfriend) sort of puts this in a somewhat different light.

How would you feel if it was your daughter's nude photo that was forwarded to many, many others?

I think that announcing it and making them feel like they could be in huge trouble would be justified, but carrying out a sentance would be unlikely and extreme. Those kids deserve to be a little scared for what they did, they don't deserve to be registered sex offenders though.

What is 1 month detention, school detension or juvenille hall? One month school detention could be justifiable, I don't think juvi is necessary.

Like I said, the kids should be scared. It will reduce the possibility of them repeating such behavior in the future as adults.

Your point of view is very black and white, but this wasn't an instance of voluntary spread of a picture via cell phone. You can't show your friends pictures of your ex-girlfriend if you didn't have a camera when you went behind the bushes. You can tell your friends about it, but that's not against the law.

There is no sexual context in baby pictures, anyone that sees any sexuality in a picture of an infant has a problem.

I think they should be charged for forwarding these pics. This is a clear case of bullying and there actions should be dealt with. Being registered as sex offenders or jailed maybe extreme, but there should be some consequences.

I feel like there is not nearly enough information here to make any judgments. I mean what does "Naked photos" mean? We are just missing so many details to make a judgment. Did she consent to a topless photo? Was it a full nude engaging in a sexual act taken without her consent? Those two situations should be treated with different degrees of punishment, right? But from what we know it could be either of those two things.

Don't get me wrong, these kids should be punished. Detention is fine. Hell, Juvi for a month might be fine. But I think it should be more up to the parents to make their child's life a living hell and not to have something that will be on their record for the rest of their life.

I don't care who you are, when you were a teen, chances are you've done some pretty stupid sh*t. Did you learn from it and not do it again? Did you mature eventually? The answer to that question is (hopefully) a yes. So then why are these kids, who did something stupid, being punished for the rest of their lives?

1:00 and 2:00 hours of Friday January 29th.

The girl took the photo (one photo) of herself and sent it. It was just a nude photo. Nothing more explicit than that.

What self respecting teen is not a sex offender?
Registering them as such is redundant.
