Hi y'all, I was going to sell my NAKAMICHI DR-2 Tape Deck on Ebay. I put a tape in it this morning, and it wouldn't move the tape. Then it started very slowly, and then ran great. Do you think I need to clean the ROLLERS and SPOOLS behind the front panel? Or is the drive belt giving out or the drive motor? It runs perfect otherwise. I can't sell it if there might be an even BIGGER issue. Is there something else that may be wrong, that I'm not thinking of.

It is not unusual for a tape deck to exhibit those symptoms after not being used for an extended period. I would run it a bit. It is a good thing to run tape decks up once a month.

Yes, it has been about a year since it was run last. You make me hopeful at least. I've taken great care of it. It deserves a better home, where it will be used more now. Thanks again.

I can guarantee that it needs belts, especially if it has been idle for a long time.

Most likely a belt is broken..
They are like rubber bands and stretch over time. Also the ozones eventually eats away and destroys the rubber..

Just my $0.01.. ;)

I would not be so sure. Motors really stiffen up when not in use. If it was belts the recorder would have huge wow and flutter all the time. He says once he gets it started it is fine. Belt problems do not do that.
