Autoflagged DRC from TrueHD, and your receiver?

Hello all, thanks for taking the time to read my query. This is only for those who bitstream TrueHD to their receiver.

I'd like to know which brands of receiver can be defaulted so that the autoflagged DRC is never allowed to pass or be triggered.

I believe with the bluray players, if they are doing the actual decoding, and DRC is set to off, it remains so.

However, I don't know what it's like with receivers. My 805 requires manually defeating the DRC with TrueHD with every title. I don't know if all receivers are like this, or that mine is the rarity, or that implementation varies widely. (There is a FW update available for me, but I am on the second to last, so I highly doubt that would do anything).

This has become enough of a nuisance where I believe I would pay a significant premium just to not have to deal with this anymore. I understand that I could perhaps have everything decoded at the player, but I just wanted to know about any such possible receivers that fit the bill, as that will surely have an effect on any future upgrade decision.

IIRC, Pioneer will keep the setting? How about Denon? Marantz? Yamaha? NAD? Anthem? Emotiva? Has Onkyo/Integra changed this since my purchase?

I realized the same thing the other night when I put in Dave Matthews live at Radio City and it just didn't sound right and I realized it defaulted to the PCM 2-channel. I have the latest firmware on my 885 but I will go in and check what my defaults are set to for each type of encoding.

This never seems to happen with DTS-Master which I think is part of your point. I'll post later tonight after I get home and get the kid to bed.

Thanks adk. I think with the Matthews disc, you have to select the codec on the bluray menu itself. If true, it doesn't have much to do with receiver implementation.

Yes, this never happens with DTS-MA, because this codec never carries the autoflagged DRC; it is only with TrueHD, and no other codec, nor mch PCM.

adk, it skipped my mind, but your 885 probably works identically to my 805 (same manufacturer, same generation, right?).

The DRC from TrueHD is defeated by using the "Late Night" function I believe it is called. When you have selected the track, and it's playing, hit that button. You will see "Auto" on the pre/pro's display, and hit it again so that it says "Off". If you keep cycling, I believe there is also "On".

If you didn't know about this, the biggest difference ever is with Iron Man. Picking a smart fellow's brain, he actually preferred the flagged DRC with The Dark Knight. I tried, and I still don't like it. It is now always defeated for every TrueHD that plays in my HT.

Denon is of particular interest to me, because my ideal future upgrade would have the latest Audyssey suite, DSX with minimum of 9.1 (11.1 is gravy), with XT, and I could maybe just give up Pro capability (but that would be nice to have, because one never knows). AFAIK, only Denon and Integra/Onkyo offer all of the above.

I think I should send a PM asking rmk how his Integra handles this. Cheers all, and thanks for the help.

I can back this up based upon my Yamaha RX-V1800.
Yes, the DRC stays off unless you change the setting in the set-up menu.
I'm surprised by the fact that receivers from other company's handle this differently.

You're right! My Integra DHC-80.1 reverts to Night Mode=Auto each time the Dolby True HD disk loads. I thought I had it resolved as DRC (Dymnamic Range Control) was set to Auto on my OPPO BPD-83 but turning that off made no difference. I used Iron Man BR as I thought the audio on that disk sucked. Now I know why. Turning Night Mode off on the Integra made a huge difference but it reverts to Auto (i.e. On) each time the loads/starts.

I went through the entire Integra setup menue system and there is no setting for night time control that I could find.

I'm glad to help you out! While I am a little regretful that I didn't transmit this information to you earlier, better late than never. I have to admit that I am not too hopeful with how Integra handles this, but maybe they can surprise me. There have been who-knows-how-many improvements due to the pressure exerted by AV maniacs like you and I. If they don't do anything, it is a bit of shame, because your SSP is sort of the somewhat-maybe-within-reach-dream-SSP for me. I'm hoping that a rumor of a Denon midlevel pre/pro is in the works, but I haven't heard anything new. I would fear the pricing, because even at half the cost of the AVP, it still might be double the 80.1.

Just unplugged it and threw it down the stairs....plugged it back in and yep.....same thing.

I think I may just have it so the player decodes. That should solve the problem. I didn't have that choice until recently, as my former Pana BD30 only can bitstream the advanced codecs.

I would agree that the DRC is somewhat subtle, but yet it's still discernible. Iron Man is really the freak exception, where it just simply sounds like something is just plain wrong.

I set my unit to default at -10 at turn on. I would say that for at a least a little while now that I listen at -11 (+/-1.5 db). I don't know how much quieter you listen, but at this volume, it's still easily discernible.

It's true Glocks, I've been trying add up the excuses so that I can hit critical mass! Here is the list I have accumulated so far, feel free to help me add to it!

-Audyssey DSX for 9.1 w/ heights
-Audyssey Dynamic Volume
-Audyssey Dynamic EQ
-no DTSMA bomb issue requiring FW
-no autoflagging of DRC
-dedicated pre/pro(??)

This could very well mean that I am to be a future Denon owner. Price of admission is rather high though. But, I've never owned a Denon processor/receiver, and there's a first time for everything!

I just checked out my parents' Denon 590, and it does not seem to engage DRC with a TrueHD audio track. It's bitstreaming over, so I get the pretty lights and Dynamic Volume and the DRC under the Parameters Menu stay off. I think you're good to go with Denon.

Well, I just picked batpig's brains via PMs, and he basically said that they scrapped the plans for the above, which would have been based on the 4310. He *guesses* that Denon crapped their pants when they saw Onkyo release a wave of affordable 9ch receivers, and thinks that they decided to wait for a full blown 11ch pre/pro.

I'm going to soon start comparing pricing of 4810 and 80.1. Cheers folks.
