Uncle Sam is paying out this year and the $$ is on the way. I finally get a home audio system!! The audio system will be for 50% music and 50% movies. I have $1400.00 set aside for my entry level system.

What I have:
-51" 1080i Mitsubishi (the tv will be the next upgrade)
-PS3
-Digital HD Cable

What I need:
-A/V Receiver (ipod and Sirius ready)
-5 channel surround speakers
-Subwoofer
-Cables
-4 speaker stands for the surrounds (couch back is 39" tall, I figure the rear surrounds will be just behind the couch to the sides? No wall room to mount them.)

I went to Ultimate Electronics today and they had a Yamaha RXV665 and the Mirage Nanostat 5.1 packaged for $1150. I posted last week in the "Beginners" section and a couple guys recommended the Behringer Truths.
I have to take freight into consideration if you recommend buying over the internet.

Let me know what you think. Thanks.

I've been able to get Ultimate Electronics to price-match internet prices for most of my components & speakers.

I would find the best price online (BEFORE SHIPPING COST) and see if Ultimate Electronics will price-match.

I think the rear surrounds are too close to the listener. If you have to have them right behind you, it might sound better overall not to have them at all. They will draw too much attention to themselves, and be distracting instead of immersing.

On that budget, I would turn to Infinity Primus speakers (except for the 142's) or Behringer 2030p speakers. Either can be purchased from B&H Photo pretty inexpensively. For a sub, I would look for used, good ones, from SVS, Outlaw Audio, Hsu Research, Elemental Designs, Epik subwoofers. Check the classifieds here at audioholics, and also AVSForum.com, Audiogon.com, Hometheatershack.com, and company website message boards, such as Elemental Design's site board, Hsu's website forum, etc. If you are thorough, you can get a awesome sub for a great price. Also look on ebay. You probably won't have much luck finding a really good sub on craigslist though.
For receivers, I would check out refurbished ones, or company outlet stores on ebay, such as Harman/Kardon's ebay store. Get speaker cable from Home Depot or monoprice.com.

I think you can get a great system that way and still have money left over.

Thanks, sounds good so far. As far as the rear speakers, I have about 5 feet of room between the back of the couch and the back wall. The only problem is, the sliding door is right there. In the future I will be moving the sliding door over about 10 feet so that I can have a solid wall and 2 rows of theater seats.
