After going through the user manual I am confused on how to set up the audio correctly. I would like to get the best audio quality for CD's and DVD-A on a 2.1 setup and use my 5.1 setup for movies. Is this possible with different settings for each media type or must I change the settings each time? I know it has a dedicated stereo analog connections but how do I set this up to use those just for CD's and DVD-a sources?

Also, I have an Onkyo 807 and I'm thinking the bass management should be done with the AVR not the BDP?

Thanks in advance!

First, all of the outputs are active simultaneously. If you want to use the analog stereo output for CD's, just connect the analog stereo out to the CD input on your Onkyo 807 and select that input. Be aware, though, that the Onkyo will convert the analog to digital to do bass management and then convert back to analog.

Since you have the Onkyo 807, the easiest way to connect the player is via HDMI. If you want to, you can simply set HDMI Audio to Auto and disable Secondary Audio. I also turn Pro Logic II off. This will handle any disc you play.

Thanks for the reply Gonk! Will setting the Audio to Auto change it from 5.1 to 2.1 on CD's? I'm guessing it will. Also, by using the analog stereo out the Oppo uses a better DAC but, if Im following you correctly, the ultimate quality will be dictated by the Onkyo when it reconverts it back to analog? Sorry for the novice questions, this is all new to me!

As long as Pro Logic II is disabled, the player will not do any matrix processing to the audio. That means that 5.1 will stay 5.1, and 2.0 (such as CD's) will stay 2.0.

Setting HDMI Audio to Auto will cause the player to "negotiate" with your receiver to determine what formats it can accept as bitstreams and what formats it needs to decode for the receiver. Since your 807 can decode pretty much anything, the BDP-83 will output bitstream (meaning the player doesn't do any decoding). At that point, your receiver will be responsible for everything.

The receiver does offer an option for leaving analog sources in the analog domain. I haven't used the 807, but I have an Onkyo processor that is based on the older 905. Both the "Pure Audio" and "Direct" listening modes will leave analog stereo inputs alone. There is a catch, though: it will mean the receiver can't do any bass management. Since you were identifying CD playback as "2.1" I assumed that you wanted the sub involved when listening to CD's. Since CD's don't have a ".1" channel, the only way to get a subwoofer signal is to do bass management.

If you want to, you can connect the stereo analog output of the BDP-83 to the CD input of the 807, set the receiver to either Pure Audio or Direct, and compare that to the HDMI connection.

I'm thinking using the Auto audio and turning off PLII is the way for me to go. I really want to utilize my sub for music so its a no brainer I guess.

With having the PLII turned off will that have a noticeable effect when watching movies in 5.1?

If the source is 5.1 and you have 5.1 speakers, PLII won't even be available because there is nothing for it do. If you had 6.1 or 7.1 speakers, then PLIIx would turn 5.1 into 6.1 or 7.1.

You would leave PLII off if you want DD 2.0 or PCM 2.0 (such as from a CD) to remain 2 channels and not be matrixed into 5.1.

OK next questions from the n00b....

The guy I bought my Pioneer 111fd from set up the day and night modes using D-Nice's settings ( http://www.controlcal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1750&postcount=1 ). The picture looks amazing as far as my opinion goes. My question is, do I need to use the calibration DVD that came with the BDP-83 for the player or is it intended to calibrate the settings for the tv? I dont want to start toying with the settings on the set and messing up the picture!

Thanks in advance!

Typically the recommendation is to leave the player's video settings at 0, calibrate the display, and only use the player settings if you need to.
