Can I hang the subwoofer? (inside drop ceiling)

I went to this nice chinese restaurant called pei wei (price is cheap, $7 for a meal)
Jazz was being played and I could feel the bass through the booth I was seating on. I wasn't sure where the subwoofer is located but I could see they invested in professional equipment.

I am running 6 orb speakers in 900 sf area for my yogurt shop.
the sound quality is awsome (unless a customer is an audioholic who brings his own classical cd and ask me to play it to feel the quality)

anyways I want to add subwoofer so I can hear nice smooth jazz songs.

I want the subwoofer sound to be distributed evenly.

I don't like in wall subwoofer since I don't like the look and it's too much work to cut the sheet rock :(

I have a drop ceiling (4 foot space between roof and drop ceiling) and I was thinking what if I hang the subwoofer inside the drop ceiling, in the middle of the room.

I think people can feel the subwoofer subtle way (of course , I don't want subwoofer for hiphop stuff)

it sounds ghetto installation but I think it would work all right
what do you think?

I think it would be up to you on how it sounds. What you are really asking is if we think the idea is crazy. You are talking to people who have done many crazy things in our lives with stereo equipment.
Back to your question,i would try it but add a grille or 2 in place of half a tile to allow the sound to travel instead of a booming effect. Dust falling would be another consideration as well, since you are serving food in there.

Aside from the fact it would have to be hung from the building steel by a professional.
IMO the ceiling tiles would move and flex and make their own noise. Also a very good point was brought up by Barryd about the dust and debris falling from the moving tiles.

I'd try to come up with plan 'B,' and find a floor location.
If you've ever seen the accumulated dust above a commercial ceiling and up in the steel trusses you'd re-think this.:)
