Coaxial from Blu Ray - Tuner not working

I just bought a coaxial cable today for my new blu ray player. It has coaxial out, and my tuner (Yamaha RX-V540) has one coaxial input. I've been using analog RCA cables previously which have been working fine, but I wanted to get a digital cable since my hardware apparently supports it!

I can't for the life of me get it to produce any sound though. I've plugged in the cables, and have been playing around with the tuner and reading the manual for ages.

The blu ray player has options for audio output:

HDMI Audio: Auto or Bitstream
Digital Audio: Auto, PCM or Bitstream
PCM Downsampling: On or Off

I just can't work out why it's not working. I'm pretty sure my tuner supports PCM and all that. But then I have no idea about digital audio.

Do you mean Tuner like in AM/FM or Receiver? Most likely you will have to assign your receiver to DVD coax 1 or 2 or 3, which ever one you're using.

I've changed the input to CD on the receiver, and the input mode I have set to Auto. I've tried "DTS" and "Analog" but they don't work.

The manual says that it should just be able to pick up the PCM digital input in Auto mode, and then a "PCM" light will appear on the receiver display, and so should "dts" - but this isn't happening at all.

Then your Blu-Ray player is not outputting PCM digital audio. Fix that by reading the manual for the Blu-Ray player, and adjust settings accordingly through the onscreen menu.

You need to re-assign the coax input in the 540 to DVD, pg 42, so you get switching for audio/video. Don’t worry about the CD label, it’s also labeled (5). Which model BD player? Its Digital Audio should be set to Bitstream. There may be another setting in the BDP to use coax out instead of HDMI.

How many speakers are you running? I believe the 540 only handles 2-ch PCM, thus the CD default for the input.

I've already tried setting the Blu Ray to output PCM, bistream or Auto - I've tried all three options.

I just tried to reassign 1D to "DVD" and it still won't work.

The blu ray player is a Philips BDP3000. I've only got two wharfedales, hooked up to the A jacks.

I thought tuner was a device that brings AM/FM signals... p.s a radio device. Confusion.

Ok, let’s set the BDP’s Digital Audio to Auto, PCM down-sampling to On. The Input Mode on the receiver to Auto. Shouldn’t make a difference, but have you set all other speakers to None in the speaker setup since you’re only using L/R? Are you selecting the DVD source when trying to play a CD, DVD, BR? Which audio options are you selecting in the DVD/BR menus?

I’m running out of ideas here!
