outside of the last two, do not expect excellent pq, except for perhaps machinist. perfect storm is said to look terrible, loaded with jaggies. true romance is fine, but no more, but I have the impression it's still the best it has ever looked after researching.

I ordered true romance, aviator, la confidential, and traitor for total of just under $39.

note about aviator: first third of movie don't think you got ripped off. scorsese used three different filming technologies during the movie to give audience a sense of technology during different time periods. supposedly he used an older, primitive tech for the first 1/3.

there are many many more on sale, but I just noted the above.

michael clayton has rather average pq, but the movie for the price is highly recommended by me for both story and acting.

Sorry about the haphazard listing, and lack of capitalizing. I've sort of copied/pasted a part of an email I sent out to some friends.

I just bought Lethal Weapon for $10 from Amazon. I have the Amazon Prime membership where you get free 2 day shipping all year long with the subscription fee ($60 or 70 can't remember). Worth it if you buy a lot of media. You also can put your family members on your account. My uncle and I split it each year, he buys it and I'm listed as family, I pay him half and we both use it. Works well.

Oh, I did not know that! My brother would love to be on Prime too.

So, my post finally got accepted! Ten days later, lol.

BoredSys, Dark City is an enjoyable movie, but this title suffers DNR. However, just an impression from a video noob, I think DNR is less offensive with a movie that is darker overall.

raymondy, Kill Bill 1 & 2 are truly reference titles for PQ. I have a very hard time thinking of better examples as far as live action.

PRime fee is $60 a year, and I love it. I have gotten about 10 Blu-Rays through amazon that way, and a lot of equipment. Not everything has Prime though, you got to pay attention to that. I also MTURK a lot so it goes right to my account. Very nice, and free 2 day shipping.

so far on sale at Amazon(not all at the same time) I got:

Cast Away: $9.99
How to Be a Megastar Live, Blue man Group: $13.25
Repo: The Genetic Opera: $14.99
The Wedding Singer (TA edition): $4.99
American History X: $7.99
The Punisher: $9.99
Frailty: $7.99
Donnie Darko: $7.99
Full Metal Jacket: $8.99

Also, don't always look for "sales" really. Click the $5-$10 button and about 400 things will pop up, then jump it to $10-$15 to clean up the rest. All Blu-Ray btw.
Also, if you don't have Full Metal Jacket on Blu Ray, I recommend not getting it and sticking to DVD. The picture doesn't look any better, and the sound is still terrible. The filming style is really to blame with a lot of bad boom mics I think. I have to turn my system up really loud to hear people talk in it, then when the explosions come I have to turn it down. My DVD version is just as good.

Yeah, I don't understand why it doesn't come down!:(
Titles with reference PQ and SQ just usually cost more, and then if it's a popular movie, even more so. Ratatouille has taken years to go down several dollars, I think. Kung Fu Panda scored 100/100 at AVS, IIRC. You'll watch it enough times that it will be cheaper than renting. It's a demo disc too. You can always sell it to make some back. I don't know, so it's almost $20, but c'mon.

I believe this is partly why Kill Bill and Benjamin Button cost double the others on my list.

If you want a bargain for top notch PQ, try this, which according to Xylon is THE reference standard (perhaps along with Red Cliff). I just ordered it myself:
Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk (IMAX)

(3/11/09)
"This release is now top on my list as the best looking HD release from both formats."
