And so wrong you are unenlightened one(said with Yoda voice) Time Machine will restore your entire computer OS as well if your HD fails. I just restored my system a while back because of that very issue. I was back up and running in less than an hour including my copy of XP that I run under VMware

Another good option for mac users carbon copy cloner. It is free and will dupe a drive very quickly. You can set schedules too.

Also, windows has never had anything like apples time machine. Not even close. Not built in anyway. Good software to buy but not with the os, and never as elegant or as easy to use.

So, this time machine isn't available for windows. Sounds like a good program. Is the Win 7 backup option good for replacing HD failures?

Hmm not sure. I have not played with Win 7. My bro in law is sending me a copy. Legal of course I would certainly hope so since they have tried to copy Mac OS X in every other way they could think of.

Yes as will any backup solution if you use a second drive or networked device.....I take snapshots of my Leopard VM in VMWare when I do testing...
I am fully aware of the capabilities of the almighty always shiny Mac.....just as capable as any other linux/unix kernel....

They are the Bose or Monster Cable of the IT world, although this hasn't always been the case, the second they moved to intel processors and still charge outrageous sums of money for the exact same hardware that is in a PC.......you get the point.

I have been using windows backup in W7 since its beta builds and it has worked very well.

I back my PC's up across the network to my server.

They are completely automated and run backup jobs by themselves on a weekly basis (or whenever you want) whether someone is logged in or not. Time machine works on the same basis as W7's backups as it works on an incremental and not real time basis.

btw, When make you a statement like "I HATE MACS" That only show ignorance of the subject. I don't hate PC's I just can't stand Windows as an OS. Hardware is hardware; it is the OS that makes all the difference. I also have many issues with Apple, however, their operating system is not one of them. I am no Mac fan boy, but I do appreciate good hardware and software intergration and Apple has everyone else beat hands down in that arena.

I also find it interesting that PC heads always assume that a mac user does not know anything about a PC. It is usually quite the opposite. Not accusing anyone just pointing out something I have seen in over 20 years in IT.

What happens on a RAID if you irretrievably delete a file? Save over a file? Get a nasty mal-ware infection? The dog knocks over the computer sending both / all drives to the scrap pile?

Incremental backup is incremental backup.....no matter what the front end looks like it is achieving the same purpose. It might not be as graceful a solution but the functionality is the same. Your statements about time machine were about as useful as if I told him to use Rsync.....

I'm trying to point out the marketing aspect of Mac as it is similar to Bose or Monster Cable. I'm not saying they make inferior products, just overpriced ones. Once Mac started using Intel chips they made it possible to do direct price comparisons, that my friend is based on reality.

I'm not a PC head. I much prefer Linux to Windows any day. But as I game on a regular basis Windows is the easiest option in the form of a dual boot.....

I use Acronis to make an image backup of all my PC's. This has saved my butt before. I just had a hard drive fail on me, it's the one I keep at work that has all my music on it, but I also have all my music backed up on two other PC's at home, so it's not a big deal... I just sent it back to Seagate yesterday since it's still under warranty.

RAID is not a substitute for a backup. It's insurance against downtime due to a hard drive failure.

I use an external drive through USB, it takes about 2 - 3 hours to to the copy. But it is up to me to make the copy of the data.

You'll be more likely to do it if it goes faster. Use something like MS Synctoy or SyncBack. Why waste time copying files that haven't changed?

I use a three prong'd backup solution. Soon to be a four prong'd backup solution.

1) My desktop sync's its important files to my server (RAID-6) in the basement on every boot.

2) My server initiates the power up and synchronization of its files to a 2nd server (RAID-5) every morning at 2am. Once finished that 2nd server then powers off.

3) I do manual backups of the data to a set of external drives every weekend.

4) Nightly backups of important data to an off site computer.

Well your are wrong on a few points but I agree with the Apple corporate thing sort of. I can't stand Jobs thats for sure. However, he has been good for Apple. And no I am not a mac fan boy as you put it. I use macs mostly because I can't legally run OS X on generic PC hardware. That's one thing that pisses me off with Apple. Liking the OS does not make me a fanboy. Apple has plenty of faults, but they make a killer OS. Apple fan boys wear skinny jeans, have long straight hair and pierced lips and hoops in their ears, listen to emo music, and can't get girlfriends. I, on the other hand, drink IPA, have a hot wife, and own and shoot lots of weapons. Guns make mac fan boys wet themselves.

There is also a several mac models that are very competitively priced with PC's; Laptops mostly. I think 1200 for a one piece AL bodied laptop with a core2 duo is not unfair at all. And the Mac Pro's if you need an 8 core machine are also priced within reason. Go Price an Alienware dual quad core out and tell me the price.

However, I do want a mac tower that I can build upon on that is priced around 1200 bucks to start. That is one thing that burns my biscuits with Apple.

Oh and I removed the cute little apple stamp on my site. Happy now? iWeb automatically puts that there on every page you make. I have meaning to take it off for a while. Thanks for reminding me. Stupid thing was actually a link to Apple too.

Good point. I maily do it so that I'm sure that it's backed up. I have had too may HD fail over the years. So, I'll look at these. So, with the sync. The 2nd hard drive would always have to be on?

You had me quite confused for a while with the quote in your sig....it just didn't add up that you were an apple fanboy, yet had a Regan quote in your sig.

I would agree that Mac makes some great laptops that have very innovative designs. If prices were comparable I would have picked up a Macbook a long time ago, but they aren't, so I won't pay extra for nothing.

No, you turn it on and plug it in only before running the synchronization. Then, when it's done you eject it power it off and unplug it.

You're better off with an external drive that isn't powered (or plugged into anything) except with being written to so it is completely isolated from any accidental deletion, power surge, or virus outbreak.

I did price it out and I couldn't really get what I wanted for my budget.....I'm very good at accepting compromise.

Also 99% of what I do is sitting at a workstation. When I'm on my laptop 99% of the time I am just remoting back to a very powerfull workstation anyway.

For instance right now I am running an old as dirt Dell D600.

Ah now I remember the other reason I didn't want to get a Macbook is the lack of a docking station option, this is a MUST for me.
