Table Saws

I know this is kind of a DIY deal, but when we get a house one of the first things I'm looking to purchase is a table saw. Thanks to Highfigh

He pointed me to the great deal on the Grizzly saws. Which seems to now be the front runner. Seeing as they are on an insane sale right now.

Just thought I'd see what others where using. I want to do panel for speakers(obvious), but I'd also like to do shelves maybe some cabinets etc.

Jet, Delta, Grizzly, Powermatic, Steel City, etc are made in the same plants in China. General is made in other locations but General International is made in Asia like the others. They all have people onsite to maintain quality and IMO, they do a very good job. I have had my saw for close to 10 years and it has been excellent, other than the material used for the fence faces "growing" when it gets really hot and this isn't much of a problem because when it's that hot, I don't want to be outside, anyway.

I bought 7' rails for the fence because I use sheet goods and with this setup, I can cut 52" to the right of the blade. With a 10" Forrest blade, I can often make the cut and not need to joint it for gluing. I made an extension table for the right side and my router is mounted in that. It also lets me use the fence for routing grooves and rabbets. I also use only one tape measure when I make things because using more than one introduces a variable that could mean a piece won't fit where I want it to go or a part won't fit the rest of a project and with this saw, I don't need to measure every cut. I set the fence and that's how big the piece is, every time. It's also on a mobile base because I can't leave it out in the middle of my garage.

The Grizzly table saws are quite good, depending on the model, they can be excellent. Jet, Powermatic, and Delta all make excellent full size table saws as well. If you are going for a contractors model, or a portable, thats when the differences become apparent, and important. If you are shopping for the big guns, you will most likely be happy with any of the brands mentioned so far in this thread. I will say that Grizzly has a lot of bang for the buck and I recently had the opportunity to use one of their newer cabinet saws with a digital angle readout (very cool), but avoid their horizontal bandsaws (not so good)that is a primarily a metal working tool, though. I have found their woodworking stuff to be pretty good.

I also have a Grizzly bandsaw with 6" riser block, 6" jointer and 12" planer. I bought the jointer before the saw and only use it occasionally because the TS cuts so well. If I were to buy a jointer now, I would go much larger. The bandsaw is fairly inexpensive but with a little setup, I got it to the point of being able to resaw white oak so thin I can see light through it. That comes in handy when I want to make my own veneer for speakers or whatever.

I have never heard of Grizzly.

My nephew got a pretty nice Rigid from HD for $500. It's not a portable but it does come equipped with retractable rollers.
He sure likes it.

I use a jet and have been very happy.

That Jet looks like it might cost $1,200 - $1,500. His wife will never allow that.

I've got the portable 10" table saw Model #DW744X by DeWalt. It's smaller than your non-portable options listed above, but for me that was a necessity for space constraints. I don't use a table saw very often, so having one that I can store out of the way for 355 days out of the year was key.

I've got the portable 10" table saw Model #DW744X by DeWalt. It's smaller than your non-portable options listed above, but for me that was a necessity for space constraints. I don't use a table saw very often, so having one that I can store out of the way for 355 days out of the year was key.

I think Bosch might have the upper hand in that department with their wheeled job.

I thought WmAx said it was around $500 at HD. He owns one and he did the homework on it.
Something about a superior low resonance extreme fence ...
If you hook it up to a DCX ... you can hear the ocean.

You've been given good advice on tablesaws, but you might want to read reviews on sites like Fine Woodworking, Wood Magazine, American Woodworker, Lumberjocks, New Woodworker, etc. I've been a pretty serious woodworker for 40 years and have built up a nice array of tools, chosen mostly on the strength of reviews on the sites I listed. I always tried to choose the top-rated tool in each category, and haven't been let down yet. I have a Jet Exactasaw, but the Delta Unisaw, Powermatic, Grizzly, and General are also excellent choices. Choose a color and try for your best deal.

I've spent more on woodworking tools than audio/video gear. Maybe next I'll try buying some wood ...

LOL. But he forgot to tell you he had to replace the motor and fence and braced it with steel. Then he lined it with concrete and made it silent with rockwool. Something tells me nothing stays as is in that guys house.

I've heard from woodworkers that the Bosch is better than the Rigid. If the grizzly stays on sale when the time comes for me I'll probably beg my wife to let me get one of those. Of course I'll need to build an outfeed table and panel jig so I can finally build my speakers.

Well I know the really top notch brands, but it's the deals us common folk need.

If I were in the 2k range I'd be getting a saw stop(ok I'd really be getting a new 1080p projector or a stack of Yamaha P2500s) I figure 1k should get me a good enough saw for my humble hobby.

No wonder divorce rates are through the roof.

I figure 1k should get me a good enough saw for my humble hobby.

You can get a lot of saw for a grand. Stick to that number so that when you do get the $500 saw you will have money for lumber and what not. A friend of mine got a Jet that was on sale while Jet was offering a rebate so it was like getting a $1,000 saw for around $650. It happens ...

Oh yeah, let's not overlook used. I think that I would sooner do that than anything.

Wow you guys really are Woodaholics. My saw equipment in very meager. I have a brother-in-law that has all sorts of wood working equipment and has a separate, fairly large woodwork shop. I am satisfied veiwing the National Forest -now that is a truly awe inspiring woodwork project.

I've used both the Dewalt model and the Bosch model as I have both at work, I would definately go with the Dewalt, the rack and pinion fence is the deal breaker.
