I'm looking for an explanation as to why the new blu ray technology does not allow for 7.1 sound, or am I missing something? I'm currently looking for a blu ray either the OPPO or Marantz 7004. One main difference that was pointed out to me is the CODECs offered with the OPPO and not the Marantz. Now anyone who is willing to take the time and explain this to me just remember I am completely a novice and the info needs to be explained as if I were a 6 yr old. I currently have a 7.1 system that works great using the SA DVD player by Marantz (1 to 11/2 years old), but once again the way it was explained to me is that the formats are only as good as the Blu ray discs you buy. So my question is if I have A SA DVD player that can decode to 7.1 why can't the new OPPO? That is the main reason I'm upgrading to a Blu ray so I can get much better video and audio utilizing 7 channels. T

I do believe you missed something. Blu-ray is the ONLY format that allows for true 7.1. DVD offered up to 6.1 discrete and that could be processed into 7.1. Certain Blu-ray movies have discrete 7.1 tracks and the Oppo handles these just fine.

too tempting. Way too tempting.

You see most movies they made with less sound while new movies they made with more sound. The Blu discs have more sound than the other ones. :D

Now the blu disc box and the sound box make more sound together. When they are friends, but the sound box must be friends. What is the name of your sound box? :D (my best 6 year old talk sorry)

I only have a few deep passions besides my wife. One: playing Billiards. Two: Playing Golf which has been my profession for seventeen years and three is my music and movies. My wife however thinks the later is a waste of money. I guess I just let the cat out of the bag as to who wears the pants in the household!!. All this electronics stuff is just way over my head so that's why I go to you guys the experts!! Thanks for a very very simple explanation.
Peace.

I think I'd get the Oppo, but with the changing pace of technology I prefer to get the low cost players. Get a very reliable amp and then you can use any receiver with pre-outs to do the processing.
