Few weeks have passed since I saw Avatar in IMAX 3D in Local cinemaplex, but now the first WoWs effect has passed, I begun to wonder - Was I just got cheated?? I distinctively remember watching few years ago Matrix Revolutions on "Real" IMAX screen in Lincoln Sq Loews - you know - 3 story tall one, but the screen in local theater was only slightly bigger then regular screen - which made me real confused? How come they both just called Imax, then the latter barely measures up...

I my short, but production search I found this great article and link the map, which clearly shown the local cinemaplex "imax" as a "fake" one.

There are a bunch of "fake" imax screens around north America. As far as I know they no longer make the monster screens unless you go to a science centre or some other sort of educational based complex.

The screens are just too darn big to be functional in a normal theatre.

We go the that same "real" Imax on Lex & 68th in NYC regularly and it's no comparison to the "Imax lite" that the AMC multiplex up the street just added. We tried that once. Wotta disappointment, but to those that have no access to a "real" Imax, it's better than nothing, particularly when coupled with 3D, particularly if they have a load of kids in tow.

"Imax Lite" seems to be making inroads in the 'burbs. There's no comparison but it does give those with no access to a real Imax a taste of the experience. ...and it provides a little of green boost to the theatre owners.

The problem is they calling both very different screen the same name, where I come from it's called lying.
Lets leave original HUGE screens to be called IMAX and new "fake" ones to be called IMAX Digital. Then there would be no lies.

I didn't notices, but there is apparently screen door issue on the "fake" imax screens...

Imax is simply "capitalizing" on their name much like THX has been doing for the last so many years.

Remember, not every locale can afford to dedicate a three-story theater to be a real Imax theater. For all intents and purposes, we DO come from the same place. We're lucky to be able to discern the difference. Not everyone had a "real" Imax theatre close to them.

Granted, they could come up with a more explicit way of differentiating between the "real" Imax theatres and the "Imax Lite" (my term) theatres rather than calling them "The Imax Experience" but, like i said earlier, they are still better than the standard movie screen and without them, the public would have nothing.

I'm sure in time the public will become aware of the differences between a "real" theatre and one labelled "The Imax Experience" and if it matters that much to them, they will vote with their dollars.

Supposedly - the screen is obviously shaped different, but the projectors using same 72mm film as regular (REAL) imax, but not 100% sure on this one.

Whenever the wife and I decide to enjoy a movie that is in IMAX we head to Navy Pier, I would be upset to pay extra $$$ for a smaller screen. Is IMAX going to fix this issue and call the smaller screens something else? I would call the larger screens True IMAX.

Even with the full size dome imax, it still doesn't give me the maximum experience. I saw star trek on it, and they just took the regular movie and stretched it almost entirely on the dome. That will be the last time I'm ever seeing a movie not made for imax on an imax screen.
