Color me impressed. Wow, I guess I haven't listened to enough of the collection. The Black Album was always a bit sybillant in my system and I presume that is due to mastering. It sounded like a wall up front and though the surround mix was good, it sounded like one sound and the bass overall seemed to get lost on most tracks. With the SE, Hatfield's vocals are clear and crisp without and the sybillance is gone. Surrounds are wider and both they and the bass are more clear. It still isn't up there with the best recordings, but it does sound as good as I can say I've heard it.

As a result of that, I decided to pull out my Godsmack The Other Side SACD, which I hadn't listened to on the SE yet. I have to admit, I almost teared up at how good it sounds.

Verdict: 83SE Upgrade worth every penny.

Godsmack on SACD?? How did I miss that???
Oh, and I like Neil Young's Harvest DVD-A. Also, Megadeth's Peace Sells.

OK, so I saw one yesterday - Led Zepplin's greatest hits with a case like a SACD in the SACD/DVD-A section, but it didn't say DSD anywhere on it? Anyone know if this is a SACD or DVD-A?

SA-CD.net doesn't list it, so checking DVD-A. Only thing I can find is that the deluxe edition includes a DVD, nothing about DVD-A. It is called Mothership.

Was that the Mothership CD? I wanna say that it's DVD-A.

Favorite DVD-As

If you liked Steely Dan's Gaucho, you might also like Donald Fagan's Morph the Cat,Kamakiriad, and Nightfly. The bass line on Morph the Cat will give your sub a workout... Also, Mark Knopfler's Shangri-La and Sailing to Philadelphia are great multi-channel DVD-As.

I'm a big fan of the DVD-A format, but unfortunately, it seems to be all but gone. One company I forgot to mention is AIX records. They seem to be one of the last companies to put out lots of DVD-As, but not mainstream pop/rock stuff. Lots of jazz, folk, classical. My favorite is "Guitar Noir" by Laurence Juber (former lead guitarist with Wings).
