When using LFE input on a sub, does the crossover on the sub even work?

Hello,
I'm using an Onkyo TX-SR806 receiver and two subs (on a splitter from the Sub Out) -- a Velodyne FSR-15 and a Defintive Technology SuperCube Reference. On the Velodyne I'm using the Line Level inputs (also on a splitter because this model is old and doesn't have an LFE in) and on the Def Tech I'm using the LFE input. In the receiver I have the sub crossover set at 80 Hz, the default THX setting.

So the question is: since I'm using the Sub Out on the receiver and LFE on the sub, is it still necessary to adjust the crossover on the sub? It doesn't seem to have any effect on the sound at any setting.
Thanks.

Looks like they don't

I just found out: looking up the owner's manual for the SuperCube, it says, The LFE inputs on your SuperCube subwoofer are direct coupled inputs which are not affected by the subwoofer’s low-pass filter or low-pass crossover control.

So on the Velodyne, which doesn't have an LFE input, I just set the Crossover switch to "Out", to get the same effect.

If you set the sub's crossover all the way up, you will be using the crossover in your receiver, that is if your subwoofer's built in crossover isn't defeatable.

Your Velo has a crossover in/out switch to defeat, how ever depending on placement you might want to use it

But if I have the sub crossover and the receiver crossover working at the same frequency (80 Hz), isn't that making the roll-off twice as sharp?

not if you run it from the pre-outs on the onk, providing your not running an external amp.

I'm using the Sub Out on the receiver, which as I understand it has its own crossover at the frequency of your choosing in the setup (80 Hz, in this case).

NO When using the LFE input on the sub, the sub's crossover is DEFEATED (NOT used), but most turn it to its hightest setting anyway.
