Advice on a SUPER BASS sub

Has technology changed that much in the sub world over the last 5 years? I look looking at a SUB again...because of a lighting strike. It was my ONLY device not on my Monster SP.

I have to run 2 powered subs because of the size of my room (20x20). I have always loved the S-125 Powered subs...hits amazing back in the day. I run all B&W and M&K speakers with 7.1 True HD.

Looking at a newer B&W KX-12 or the B&W V1250 THX.

If anyone has any other recommendations please let me know...I want something DEEP and LOUD and TIGHT!! So deep that you feel it and shakes the windows.

Read a little bit about the SVS subs and they seem good also. Any advice on what you think is good let me know. I will be buying used since I do not want to spend 1k on a new sub...(do not have good luck with them..LOL)

Thanks
Jon

If you want a killer sub like you describe, you need to build it yourself. The best subs are definitely DIY and there are some good designs on these forums.

B & W subs are very disappointing in my view.

For commercial subs look at SVS, HSU and Fathom.

DIY - REALLY..wow, I do have a box now...LOL

Never built it..maybe I can pay someone to build one. Not much time with 60-70 hours a week first job along with my company. Many hobbies..LOL Oh, and I am married...

Surprised M&K Disappointed you. I thought the S125 sub hit hard but smaller rooms.

SVS sounds awesome just 1k is to much for me right now. Like to spend 500-600 if that is even possible.

How big of a sub can you or the WAF (if applicable) handle?

Used HSU ULS-15 (smaller, sealed sub)

If size is not an issue Danley has a DIY kit for $1000, you just need to assemble and get an amp.

EDIT: You posted while I was and I didn't read the price range accordingly.

For that range check out my build of Bill F. Tuba HT. There is nothing in that price range that can touch it.

M & K is out of business and their amps have given a lot of trouble.

See, I learned something...Thanks...no M&K then..

Matt,
That looks amazing but, I honestly do not have the time to build a box and or setup a sub. I am not that DIY type of person...LOL

I saw this one. Someone is selling the dual setup for the same price used. Granted his is 5 years old and worried about how long it will last.

I want to really FEEL it in my chest. Not sure if a single driver will do that. Thats for the advice thus far..

Which one?

First thing one good sub is much better than two poor ones. So all things being equal you will be better off putting your money into one good sub.

What you are looking for is only truly possible DIY or something really expensive like the Danley. The commercial subs are all limited by issues such as port compression etc.

Actually, they were back and their problems were caused by someone in their management. They had serious quality issues, though- that's for sure.

Actually, one woofer can make you feel it in your chest but the box, port and driver need to be right for it. Also, you need to make sure the sub is right for the room. We have discussed a spec called Qtc, which is the total Q of the system. Q refers to the system's resonant frequency and hos strongly it resonates- also how wide peak is with respect to the frequencies around that peak. The higher the peak, the stronger and narrower the peak and the lower the Q is, the wider and more gentle it will be. It also has to do with how well the peak is damped and a high Q isn't damped very well. Think of this as a drum head with no damper pad touching the drum head vs having the damper in contact.

Which frequency hits you in the chest depends on your body size, mass and your own resonant frequency. Lighter/smaller will feel it with a higher frequency and larger/heavier will feel it with a lower frequency.

Some of this is over my head..LOL

I know my room is 20x20x8 and open to the kitchen with a 12ft opening. Now sure the Q or some of the other items.

Just don't get your hopes up on any of the subs recommended or the ones you have mentioned. Your not going to find what your looking for in a commercial sub for that size of room within your budget. Your going to have to go DIY or at least spend over $1000 for something like the SVS ultra PB-13, Epik Phoenix, ED A7-450.

Or you can spread out the cost and get multiples of the lower line ED/SVS subs as the budget allows.

I don't think I agree, totally. For consumer equipment, this is probably true but Cerwin-Vega makes subs that would probably knock the paint off the wall. For pro audio, there are a lot of options and Parts Express or Musician's Friend would be two places to look. Musician's Friend has their 'Stupid Deal Of The Day' and sometimes, they toss a sub in there. $100-$150 gets a pretty good woofer for pro use and Parts Express has a Dayton SA-1000 subwoofer amp that, if the power output is what they state, is the deal of the century. It has level, crossover frequency and phase (0°-180°) controls and a parametric EQ that controls center frequency, level and bandwidth. It has a bass boost (with the power this puts out, I can't see that as necessary), subsonic filter (this is definitely necessary) and triggered turn on that can be switched off, set for on with signal voltage and it also has a 3.5mm jack for triggered output, like on some receivers. It sports LFE input as well as L & R inputs and has a stereo pair of high pass output jacks, all RCA. Two pairs of speaker terminals complete the back panel and the manual explains how to eliminate hum. Oh, yeah- the controls on the front can be pressed flush when adjustments are done.

I just hope it's powerful enough.:D

I do have doubts that many setups will do what yours can, though. Your voice was being modulated in your video and that's not easy to accomplish without doing something completely different from normal.
