Suggestions for a new sub for $400

Hey guys I am looking for a new sub to replace the Yamaha SW 5 that I had for the past 6 or 7 year and finally blew.

Heres my setup:

Receiver: Onkyo TX-SR705

Center: Polk Audio CS10

Fronts: Cerwin Vega VE-12F's

Surround Sides: Cerwin Vega VE-5M's

Surround Backs: Logitech Z-680s (Had them sitting around and figured why not do 7.1)

I was thinking of getting a Polk Audio DSW PRO 500 but have heard that I could do better for the price. What are your suggestions? Keep in mind I am not willing to spend over $400. I am big into home theater and use this setup for watching blu rays, listening to music, and playing video games, all at absurd volumes levels. I want my new sub to bang and be discrete and precise.

(On another note, I am willing to try to put a new 12" driver in the box of the Yamaha SW 5 if that would a good idea. If anyone has a specific driver they could recommend that would be awesome. I can post a link to the SW 5's amp specs so if you google "Yamaha SW 5" its the first one.)

I don't know if the size matters to you, but I bought the Polk Micro 1000 for 349.00 at NEWEGG. It retails for 900.00. But, it is like a LITTLE GODZILLA! Just a thought. It's under 400.00

I read the reviews on that and it doesnt seem to produce good lows and I would like atleast a 10 inch.

Why Not?

Several good suggestions here regarding the eD products. However, if you want to save some money then at least consider this one:

For $250 shipped, you get a 12" sub with a full 300 watts rms and real wood veneering. I am quite familiar with this sub and it is very good for ht. It is even decent with most musical applications. It is at least worth considering imho. Good luck with your decision!

eD and HSU are your best bets. Since HT is your focus, I'd go with eD as a couple of people have suggested.

I guess I should have started by also asking if anyone knows a reason I should NOT get a Polk Audio DSW PRO 500. The sub retails for $650 and is $560 on Amazon. However I can get one for $320. Would it be a good idea to take that deal?

This guy is a little above your price range but would also be worth it. I am not a big fan of eD as a company, but to each their own. I've owned a HSU sub and they are an excellent choice IMO.

Absurd volumes, able to bang, and be precise, while under the budget before amplification, and possibly still under after amplification, I would most definitely consider building the Tuba subwoofer that Matt34 did.

I bet that even quad units of most subs you're looking at would have a very hard time keeping up with one Tuba!

However, the thing is huge!

Just buy an ED A2-300, I am confident you will not be able to touch this in output for the same price. I am sure you might be able to build something in the range that can beat it. Or you can always check out used subs on Audiogon.

Hey chunkylover21, before to buy, take your time and read reviews from HSU Research or SVS.
Maybe for additional $29, you can make a better investment.

In my oppinion I suggest HSU VTF-1 Sub.

Buy the ED sub, it's the best option by far. While Polk may make a decent speaker I really doubt their subs are very good. I'd like to see the driver specs and the xmas.
