TV audio out to preamp

Is the fidelity of a television's audio out (L-R RCA connectors, not optical) any different from the audio out from a cable box, TiVo, Apple TV, whatever? One cable to the the preamp instead of five or six seems like a good idea but not if the sound is going to be degraded. Thoughts?

Pre-out levels on a receiver are generally 1V but the line-outs on a TV are much lower. The TV manual usually lists the levels and if it has both fixed and variable outs, they will be different. The fixed out on my Toshiba LCD is 150 mv. If it had a variable out, it would probably be something like 0 - 200 mv.

You just may have to turn up the volume on the receiver a bit more than you would with a source device that provides a higher level signal.

Depending on the TV, the sound may, or may not, be acceptable. i've heard some that were really noisy and that just doesn't cut it. If you have cable or satellite, you're probably better off using that feed.
