My first inclination was similar. But I think it's just sheer desperation. A friend of mine here in aother area has family in Haiti. They were okay and have been able to get here, but he said there is litterally no a single building undamaged. His brother in law told him the damage was of "epic proportions" and that when people say there are more dead people than those alive it may not be or at least doesn't seem like an exaggeration.

It's not like Katrina where a lot of people simply chose not to leave in the face of a massive storm and yet everyone gave and gave and gave and gave and gave and then when things aren't fixed overnight in the face of massive destruction beyond what anyone could have ever thought could happen... the race card starts getting thrown around and people start pointing fingers. I knew people there and am friends with emergency and fire rescue people who went there. The stories of those people about how they were welcomed and treated would make you cringe at best and probably outraged.

This is very very different. My friend I work with here has a friend that has done mission work there for some time. He's said in the past 3 years or so since the UN has had a new general there, things have begun to turn around. These people were just going about their lives and were just suddenlly wiped out without warning or mercy. They deserve our utmost charity and yes... understanding. We've mobilized and have been able to raise some money and supplies that we hopefully can get there through the mission.

Heard on the news last night, that over the years Clinton and Bush have sent $Billions of US dollars there, and because of the corruption in Haiti there is no accounting for the money.
Add to that all the money that other countries gave; there isn't even a little improvement of their infrastructure to show for it.
I don't think the damage would've been as bad now, if the money was put to a good use back then.

Not to be Captain Obvious over here but Mr. Desperate stacking bodies never saw one red cent of those billions. As badly bungled as the New Orleans relief effort was in this country, I just can't imagine how incredibly f^%&ed up it must be down in Haiti and I honestly hope I never find out.

I'm gonna do like Tomorrow and stock up on something.

I think it probably would have been just as bad given the type of quake and the low probability of it's occurrence. This is on par with the Kobe 90s earthquake as far as quakes go.

We are talking a magnitude 7 earthquake only 10 meters deep and 10 miles away from a heavily populated center that was not considered earthquake prone at all. Construction was made to be more hurricane and flood resistant not earthquake resistant. This is truly a shocking terrible disaster.

The corruption is truly sad too. They have no chance to earn a living because there aren't any jobs. There is little good soil and they constantly getting hit with disasters. It makes me wonder if the socialist style might not be better for poorer nations.

It's really bad even without a quake. Infant mortality is way too high. The weird part is I don't think they care about their sovereignty like Iraq does. They probably wouldn't mind 100,000 us troops helping them out. It makes me wonder.

The criminals over there need to be arrested and prosecuted and until that happens then nothing will change. I agree on the sending the troops but they need to set up shop there and make sure the rule of law is enforced.

You need to understand that desperate people do desperate things. Sure, it's mind-boggling to see such things going on. But, it would also be mind-boggling to go through what they have as well. It makes absolutely no sense from our perspective, but they are in a situation that can make people do the most illogical things. I won't presume to judge.

You wouldn't get any red chiclets from me - just a request to be a bit more empathetic.
