Hello guys

Well im moving to a much bigger place and will be having a dedicated theater room. I have one now but its the small room in my small crapy trailer. About 7x7 or smaller. My new place is about 1600 sq ft compared to my 500 sq ft place right now. More then enough space for my wife, dog and me.... no kids thankfully. My new room will be about 11x11. Not sure, but some wear around that.

I want to make it a pretty hard core theater... well something in the upper echelon of low budget if that makes any sense.

This is what i currently have:

40" Samsung 6 series LED HDTV. Might migrate to living room and replaced with projector in a year or more... hopefully.

PS3 for games and Blue ray

Yamaha RXV465BL 5.1 receiver. 105 watts x 5 into 8 ohms (1k Hz) at 0.9% THD.Upgradable to 7.1. All the HD decoders needed.

2 Sony tower speakers.Model: SSF5000
2 Sony surround speakers. Model: SSB1000
1 Sony center speaker. Model: SSCN5000
1 100w Sony sub. Model: SAW2500
1 crapy futon that desperately needs replacement.

These speakers are not top of the line but a good $4-500 bucks were spent on them so its unlikely the wife who does not care for my man cave will allow an upgrade anytime soon.

Heres my initial plan for the room.

Paint: Likely a really dark wine color accented by black likely.
Carpet: Later hope to replace it with some kind of a black dotted carpet.
Futon: Later to be replaced with a leather love seat at least. Hopefully a
dedicated reclining theater furniture couch (google it) that will sit at
least 4.
Want to remove the roof fan. Will hang a... how do i explain this.... a piece of fine wood, painted with some kind of design and about 2 feet smaller then the room in all directions. Hanging from the corners about 6 inches from roof with ambient lighting behind it.

Big cherry red trim along the top and in the corners going down to the floor from Home Depot. The kind you see on the stand alone chimney now days.

On the walls i plan on looking for some nice wall paper. I will cut it into 2x4 squares and put them on the walls. Then small trim from Home Depot will be places around it to make it look like a poster. Kind of a cheap short cut to posters or expensive paintings.

Here is were you guys come in. Please help me get the most out of it.

I need to know what kind of speaker wire to use. How to hide it. What if any, acoustic sound stuff on the walls should i use? Is there such thing as acoustic paint? Do i need to invest on the things i see online like Bass catcher and all that stuff?

Keep in mind this is another trailer so the walls are not even sheet rock. Might upgrade to sheet rock later and can insulate at that point with acustic foam or something.. just not sure if its worth it or how much it cost.

Help with small details that people tend to overlook. Please help me and i welcome more design ideas but want to focus like i said, on things that people usually neglect that are cheap.

Also unlike the link were they hide the AV stuff, mine will likely sit on a AV rack or something under the TV.. any ideas?

What to do with the 1 window in the room? What could i do with the closet in the room?

My biggest problem right now is if i decide to somehow have the AV stuff far away from the TV how to run such long HDMI and specially how to hang or place the center speaker..

Edit: speaker towers and such thing too. When i upgrade to 7.1 should i a) buy 2 more of the surround speakers or b) buy 2 more towers for side surround and move my current bookshelf surround speakers to rear surround?

More info please.

Hi.. I was wondering if you could provide some more information with regard to your ultimate goals.

1. Will you be using this room for anything else? or is it a dedicated theater?
2. What type of movies, shows & games are you into?
3. Is 3D video a priority?
4. Will you also want to listen to 2CH stereo music (non-video)?
5. Which is more important, audio or video quality?
6. Will you be using the room alone mostly? or with guests?
7. What is your skill level with remodeling?
8. Have you considered building a headphone theater... with no speakers, just good projector, high-end headphones, and buttkicker sub?

Lotta questions in this post, but I'll try to hit some high points about stuff I know.

I want to make it a pretty hard core theater... well something in the upper echelon of low budget if that makes any sense.
First and foremost you need to decide on a budget, or how much you intend to invest annually and stick to it. A lot of HT's never get finished because to much money was spent to quick. Set a budget, divide the budget in to audio , video, and remodeling cost. And spend accordingly.

I need to know what kind of speaker wire to use. How to hide it. What if any, acoustic sound stuff on the walls should i use? Is there such thing as acoustic paint? Do i need to invest on the things i see online like Bass catcher and all that stuff?
speaker wire - monoprice.com 12 gauge 2 conductor
how to hide it - preferably fish it through the walls, or if you have carpet you can try stuffing it under the base board
acoustic paint? - none that I know of
acoustical treatment - it helps but is not necessary especially if you have a lower budget put that money into better gear and put off acoustical treatment until later

Keep in mind this is another trailer so the walls are not even sheet rock. Might upgrade to sheet rock later and can insulate at that point with acustic foam or something.. just not sure if its worth it or how much it cost.
If you take down the wall board and hang sheet rock it will make wiring a breeze but you won't get any acoustical improvements in the room just from having drywall. What the drywall and insulation is for is keeping the sound in your HT and not disturbing others in your home or near by neighbors.

Help with small details that people tend to overlook. Please help me and i welcome more design ideas but want to focus like i said, on things that people usually neglect that are cheap.
spend a lot of time in the forums, particularity "member system gallerias" and see what others have done. There is a wealth of knowledge here.

Also unlike the link were they hide the AV stuff, mine will likely sit on a AV rack or something under the TV.. any ideas?

What to do with the 1 window in the room? What could i do with the closet in the room?
Heavy drapes on the windows will block out the most light, The closet is an excellent place to put all the A/V gear. You just have to run the wires to it.

My biggest problem right now is if i decide to somehow have the AV stuff far away from the TV how to run such long HDMI and specially how to hang or place the center speaker..
Run the hdmi through the floor, under the room, up the inside of the wall, and into the back to the TV.

Put the center channel on a speaker stand under the TV.

Edit: speaker towers and such thing too. When i upgrade to 7.1 should i a) buy 2 more of the surround speakers or b) buy 2 more towers for side surround and move my current bookshelf surround speakers to rear surround?
If i were you I would hold off on the 7.1. You will not notice a big difference in the 7.1 over 5.1. Invest that money in remodeling.

Hope some of this was helpful. Best of luck and enjoying building your theater.

Square room = worst for acoustics. Not much you can do about that. OTOH, if the walls are thin, then maybe a lot of the midbass frequencies will actually pass through, I don't know. If fishing the wire (another +1 to Monoprice) is impossible, you can get flat-wire, or raceways that go above moulding, etc.

The impression I have is that money towards equipment upgrades are somewhere between slim and none. It seems that the looks are much more important right now. With that in mind, here is the nicest looking build for the smallest budget I've ever heard of for a dedicated HT. I'm sure the PQ/AQ performance would leave many of us AHers wanting, but it is nevertheless very impressive.

Small Budget, Smaller Room HT Conversion

Thank you guys. Heres more info now that i have moved to my new place. Lets start with what i think is the most critical...

The room is 11wx13L. The roof is tilted. Its 7 feet on one end and 9 on the other. The Tv will go on the 11x9 wall because the 11x7 wall has a window right in the middle.

Turns out i WILL need to keep the sound from escaping. This is a double wide mobile home and the only wall is 1/4 drywall on the inside and Trailer panel on the outside. Needless to say you can hear everything outside.

Heres my new plan... will take down drywall, replace it with Sound board from Home depot and 1/2 or 5/8 inch drywall (any sugestions?) This will give me over an inch of wall and a price of about $12-$16 dollars total per 4x8 space (soundboard and drywall total per sheet) My quick calculations put me under $300 bucks total not including roof... Im not sure yet if ill do roof..

This will make it super easy to pre wire everything.

Next ill try to answer everyone.

joshg3p0: 1: Dedicated Theater 2: Most any kind of movies and video games. No sports or regular tv. 3: No 3D. 4:No music. 5: Video i guess.. my audio componets are enough for me for now. 6:mostly alone gaming, movies w wife, rare with guests. Seating for 4 will be made. 7: Im handy 8: I had not tought of that but i dont like the idea of not being able to talk to who ever is in the room with me.

yes my focus is the room itself for now. Budget mayve 1500 max. But by what i have seen i dont think ill get near that much...

Ill explain my exact idea now that i see the room.... mayve ill be easier if i scan some drawings and post them.. Ill do that right now.

That is the basics of what i want. As you can see the closet door will be removed. For the towers i will make holes on the new wall were they will fit. The wall is about 4 inches so my speakers will still stick out about 3-4 inches. This goes for the center speaker too...

Some small lights on the walls.. likely place some on the front and rear wall too.

I dont plan on painting. I am looking into doing a 2 color theme.. First will be from floor to about 3 feet up the wall. It will be likely a dark wine color suede fabric.. the second will be black... not sure if ill use suede for this or other cloth.. might even use the sponge that goes under carpets on the wall under the fabrics to make them soft...

Comments? ideas? questions?

ps. just got the approvable from wife to upgrade tv... please help in my other post.http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=8

Just finished some quick sketches of what i imagine the room to like like... Forgot to add a AV tower in the rear and the projector.
