Need a way to get HDMI to VGA/Component

So, I know you can't go directly from hdmi to component cable, because that would be silly, as it's a digital signal to analog. But some receivers allow you to put video into it in one way, and then out in another, so I assume it would be possible to get a box or something that converts it either up or down.

So here's the deal, I have a laptop, that only has HDMI out. That's all, no other output sources. Then I have a projector that has 2 VGA inputs, which I can easily hook component cords to, a regular yellow composite input, and a S-video input.

My receiver does not have HDMI outs or ins, nor do I really want to search for a new receiver right now, as I don't have that much extra money at the moment.

Can anyone offer any ideas? Or just tell me it's impossible, so that I stop trying to think of solutions?

Yeah, you're right... there are lots of cables out there, but they don't do what you need them to. You have to have a converter and they are fairly expensive from what I've seen if they have any decent reviews at all. You're looking at a couple hundred bucks.

How about a docking station that supports video. Might not be GREAT for gaming, but it would work. Newegg or Tiger Direct has a few of these things..

If its for media, just get a WDTV or something and stream the media to it. It has Component video outs...

The problem with going from USB out to DVI is, isn't that comparable to HDMI? So wouldn't I be stuck in the same boat, just now converting DVI to VGA?

The problem you will find is you need an analog signal to convert to VGA. DVI can carry an analog signal, but not from an HDMI>DVI adapter. There are some scalers and switchers that will allow you type of connection, but for big bucks. The usb to external video dock is the cost effective solution or a new laptop

That thing I posted is compatible with VGA from what I can tell. You could always call to find out.

Yeah I think I'll call them, I'd think it would also require a new video card just to go out to that thing, since it seems it's made for mac. Not sure though. I got a 2007 Alienware M15x Area 51.

Its compatible with PC. Its basically an external USB video card. They have several resolutions available, thats the cheapest one I found. Their customer service should be able to help you.
