Harman Kardon AVR20II No Left/Right Speaker output...?

Hi, I have a Harman Kardon AVR20II that's been in storage for several years and while it was stored away in perfect working order, I take it out now and find that the left/right (for speaker 1 & 2) aren't working, but the center channel is. I have the service manual for the unit but the troubleshooting steps are very limited. Any ideas what may be going wrong?

Welcome to the forum!

Do you have the front speakers connected to the "1" speaker terminals on the back?

Have you checked the "Speakers" switches on the front panel (labeled "1" and "2") to make sure that the "1" speakers are turned on?

Those are the two things that came to mind when I looked at that receiver.

Yep, checked the switches and connected test speaker to all four front speakers and nothing. Seems unlikely they would all go out at the same time, but center channel is fine? Actually so are the rears.

I took another look - on the back of the receiver, do you still have the bridges in place between the FRONT "PREOUT" and "MAIN IN" RCA jacks?

On your speaker selector switches, make sure that only #1 is pressed if you only have speakers hooked up to #1. Pressing #1 and #2 while having speakers only hooked up to #1 will make it not work IIRC.

Edit: Yep, I recall correctly.

Ok, figure it out. There are jumpers that are supposed to be connected to main in and pre out for both the right and left channels if the unit is not connected to an amplifier, which I recall it was when I was using it. If you want to use the units internal amp, you need those connections jumpered. Works fine now.

Cool. Looks like we both saw that about the same time.

Glad that it's working for you again!
