Can I turn a fixed base router into a plunge?

There's always Craig's List.

Having two routers doesn't suck. My first one is a cheap Black & Decker I bought in the late '70s and it still works fine. The collet slips a bit at times but overall, it's not usually a big deal and it's nice to not need to yank the other one out of the router table.
That is what I did. I hit Craigslist and picked up several routers on the cheap. I don't bother swapping cut bits. I don't bother with depth adjustments, I don't bother with going from a cut to a round over, I just grab the next router in line:D

I bought the plunge kit. Now that I cut the pieces I am glad I had a plunge router to cut those circles. As a bonus the kit came with a case that happens to fit both routers together and being able to move from one router to the other s a huge time saver.

Seriously, I have no life.

Who puts their router back in the case? A router can be like the 'daily driver' of power tools.
