I'm considering an upgrade for my sub. I see where some models come with a mike for room EQ setup. I just purchased a new receiver with Audyssey's MultEQ XT. What I'm wondering is will the dedicated sub EQ setup do something that the Audyssey's EQ wont do? Is there a good reason to spend the extra $$ for a sub that has the EQ setup?

The sub EQ may have more points to store in memory to correct the room problems than the Audyssey at the low band, 80Hz on down.

Just today I was looking at sub with EQ - lower series from Aperion Audio - Bravus 8D.
According to manual it can be EQ'ed 30hz to 90hz in 10Hz steps, not too much, but my Onkyo TX-SR805 i believe got only 3-4 steps to EQ subs. YMMV.

Thanks for the replies. So I guess the dedicated sub EQ might go a little further than Audyssey. I wonder if anyone has ever compared the sub settings done by the dedicated sub EQ setup with an Audyssey EQ setup on the sub?

You have to be much more specific, I think, about which dedicated sub EQ. Ok, by reading the OP, I think you are implying EQ that's already built in to a commercial subwoofer. Of all that I have seen, none will have better resolution than XT. However, what's nice about the built in stuff is that it is adjustable to taste, whereas with XT it is not. What you can then do is calibrate with XT, and then fiddle with sub adjustments to taste.

OTOH, if you are not limiting the discussion to built in EQ on a sub, but outboard devices you can add, then opinions will start varying much more. Whether it's a DCX2496, or AntiMode, or the XT built in to the SVS ASEQ1 which is designed to work with XT receivers I believe.

What does the user manual say for the Audyssey EQ?

The Denon manual is silent about subs that come with a dedicated EQ setup.

I guess some research at the Audyssey site is in order.

More informative, if not more overwhelming, is the "Official" Audyssey Thread, a sticky at the processors subforum of AVS. What you will need to do is sign up, and get used to running the search function. Searching within thread is probably the easiest search of all, and you'll see that function on the upper right, after you are signed in. The difficulty might be that using keywords like "subwoofer" will give you a thousand hits. Good luck, because there are over 22,500 posts already, but some good stuff that is interesting.
