I have a sony str-dg800 when i'm watching anything that is high def DD or DTS. "should mention only on occasions" it will play all background noises fine but will barely even output any voices. It happens the most in DD, use to be only on my Directv on HD programming now on blu-ray movies too. I'm using optical for my sound, i would use hdmi for sound but my receiver is only a pass thru "takes no sound from the cables only to tv" .....So the question i have is it my reciever or should i buy new opticals? Is there a way to use hdmi? thanks

Check your center channel speaker connections carefully. If they are OK, then either your center speaker has too low an impedance for your receiver or your center channel amp is failing and going into protection mode.

If i switch to a sound field instead of dd or dts, then i can hear voices again except i have to turn it up louder than normal, then i can sometimes switch back to dd or dts and it will work again. It's not my connections, it something with dd or dts, that is dealing with either my optical inputs or my reciever itself is failing. Just was hoping that someone would know exactly or has had the same problem. most importantly it's not ALL sound cutting out from my speakers it only the voices from all 3 front channels.
