Any other musicians here?

So, while I was away from AH this past year one of the things that I've done outside of upgrades to my HT system is, I started up a new band with some people I used to play with several years ago. I haven't talked much about it in the past here, but I'm actually a drummer, with a dabbling in guitar. I have a nice Gretsch six piece maple kit, but currently only using one mounted and two floor toms - a classic John Bonham setup with a few bells and whistles he didn't have on his kit.

See, a lot of people here have picked a very expensive hobby to get into - I have two of them. :D Were it not for my other expensive non-A/V hobby I sure would have a lot more money to toss at HT gear!

Just wondering if anyone else here plays music of any kind - I know there are a few, just can't recall who they are and what instrument they play. I know Sensi is a DJ. I dabbled around on a drummers forum for a while earlier this year, but I've got to admit, it just didn't have the same allure as AH. A real community here, unlike so many other places. So, figured I would take my other passion and plop it into the middle of this great forum and see if it sticks.

Cheers.. :)

Oh, here's a pic of my kit - kind of a bird's eye view. This is in our rehearsal space - a little warehouse we rented and put together with some cheap acoustic treatments, etc.

Oh yeah, meant to say - if you are a musician, feel free to use this thread to talk about whatever interests you, what you play, how long you've played, etc. Figure it could be a good discussion for those of us who like to jam. ;)

I play bass clarinet in the Arizona Wind Symphony. I've been wanting to upgrade my instrument to one of these. But, I simply don't have that kind of cash sittin' around the house! :(

I play a mean kazoo.

I'm kidding. In fourth grade I picked up a trumpet. Played that through high school. Ended up playing a handful of brass instruments in the process. Since then, I've dabbled with the guitar and can kind of play the piano and drums. Not really good enough to say I actually play them, but can fool some who don't know better. I actually want to really improve this year on the piano. I just think it'd be cool to play it fairly well as I get older.

Who's gonna be the first to mention a specific kind of flute in this thread? :D

I play guitar and engineer a bunch. And by the way Adam is speaking of the skin flute...:D
Oh I got it actually, was just being sarcastic, lol. Hey good that you engineer - I can call upon you for advice on miking my drums. :D I'm still learning the ropes on that part of it - got a little cheesy 4-track system with a couple of Behringer mixers to basically record our practice sessions, but have had difficulty getting a natural sound from my kit on the recorder. Right now it sounds decent, but I think it can do better, even within the limitations of the equipment I'm using.

The same person who'll mention a certain kind of organ, the male organ.

I play bass and sax but I'm the lead singer in my band presently. I do play some sax and assorted purcussion with these guys though.
I played sax all through school and took up the bass in high school when I wanted to be in a rock band.
One comment on your set.... a little shy on the cymbals, don't you think? LOL

You've probably heard this one but...What do you call a drummer without a girlfriend? Homeless. :p:D
Good idea on this thread.

I play piano, since I was seven, so quite a while now :) I play mainly classical stuff, Beethoven and Rachmaninoff being my favorite composers for the piano. I even worked on a music minor in college, but didn't want to deal with prepping for all the platforms and doing a senior recital

I am also working on guitar. My wife plays violin and viola, and can play cello. We are actually considering taking over leadership of the worship team at our church, which in essence would be kind of a band. We have a guy on base, a couple of guitars, drums, piano, and my wife plays electric violin, so I think it could be a lot of fun.

I'm an Axe man, slap a little bass when our bass player flakes out (75% of the time).

Halon,

If you want a more natural sound, you're first going to need better mics; The SM57 is basically a Snare and Guitar mic. You'll also need a proper space with treatments, and another room to setup a proper stereo pair. I'll be micing up a drum set next week in school. Need to call upon my past knowledge to get it done right.

Sheep - it's no surprise to me that I need better mics; the Shure mic you see on the bass drum is only there because it's the best mic I have in the pile of cheesy little dynamic microphones thus far, and I wanted it to deliver the punch from the kick drum. Room treatments are improving a little bit here and there (with available $$ of course). Another room is out of the question - we're limited with what we've got for now. We're not trying to do studio quality recordings here, just something decent enough to playback for ourselves so we remember what we wrote - also maybe if we get a good enough quality, record a demo or two. By the time we're ready to record for real, we're going to do it in a real studio.

So let me ask you this - I've seen a few of those drum mic kits for sale and have been considering getting one for some time now. I'm a drummer man, not a recording engineer, so I know little to nothing about this stuff :p Would buying those be akin to purchasing a HTIB? To put it in terms we can all understand... :D I don't have a lot of money to toss at recording equipment, so I'll be looking for the lowest cost solution/highest quality ratio I can find. It already costs me enough money as it is just keeping my drum set up to snuff, let alone my (ahem...) A/V addiction at home. :D

Those kits may not offer the highest quality around I'm sure, but they would still be better than what I'm using now - my theory at least.

Do you have advice for an inexpensive mic for bassdrum in a live bar situation? We've been using SM57 on snare/hihat and bassdrum too.
