Genesis SACD 70-75

Looking for anybody who has heard the SACD's 1970-1975. Can you give me your impressions of the sound quality. I'm only interested in Foxtrot, The Lamb, and Selling England by the Pound.

I own it (how'd you guess), and I think that it is absolutely fantastic in 5.1 on the SACD layer. I have not listened to it in SACD 2.0. I think I had heard that it has excellent sound in 2.0 as well, however there are many folks not thrilled with the other two boxsets, specifically regarding the 2.0 SACD mixes.

Genesis producer and surround mix guru Nick Davis's work on the Genesis 1970-1975 box has been honored with a nomination for a Grammy in the "Best Surround Album" category.

The 3 you are asking about are very exciting to listen to. Selling England by the Pound is incredible.

Just as a side note, I have recently picked up both the 'Live albums boxset', as well as the 'Live Concert boxset'... The surround sound mixes on these are very very well done.

Man that's great to hear. I've heard you can't buy them separately, is that true. I can't wait to here 'em. Genesis was the very first concert I went to ( can't remember the year) maybe 75 or 76, anyway it was fantastic.

I never got around to purchasing the 70-75 SACD/NTSC set; amazon.ca screwed me on it, and by the time they definitively told me that they could NOT get it for me, it was unavailable from other sources as well. So I had to borrow the set from a friend, and I can tell you that the audio quality is startling! There's a huge clarity, an authoritative presence, and strong bass in these new mixes. It was one of those SACD moments when I literally sat up, my jaw dropped, and I murmured, "Oh my god . . ."

Nick Davis, the guy who did the 5.1, said that the older albums (70-75) were obviously in poorer shape, sound quality-wise, and therefore show the most improvement. The latest albums were already sounding pretty good and so showed less apparent improvement. So when you do pick up and listen to the old albums on SACD . . . brace yourself!

101cd.com has the hybrid CD/SACD + DVD-A (dts +Dolby) box set in stock for £68.09, which is a bit less than $110 US. I got mine last June for a total of $112 including shipping to the US-the price is a bit higher now (£1 more for the box set than when I bought it) but still much better than I have seen on eBay and elsewhere. The DVDs are PAL and are apparently Region 0, since they play fine on my stock Region 1 Oppo BDP-83.

I wasn't aware they could be purchased separately! Very cool. I am glad I got the box though because I never really gave Trespass much of a chance until I decided to listen to it in 5.1. To my surprise I really like it. Selling England is no doubt my fav from it. The Lamb is very well done, especially if you watch it in surround as well, since it includes video images and the slideshow used back then during the Lamb tour. Although I must say I still have a soft spot for the live version of the Lamb from the Archive II release - there's something about the live atmosphere.


Gene - I think it's worth every penny, and sound quality on Gabriel era box is superb. To me it is much better than the other two, but of course that remains subjective!

Just adding my 2 cents here. I have all three of the SACD Genesis boxes and the 1970-1975 SACD multi-channel sounds much better than the other two.....especially the 1976-1982 box which for some reason sounds very harsh and uneven. I can hardly listen to Trick of the Tail as it sounds mechanical and bright. The older material, especially Selling England By the Pound is in my opinion a reference multi-channel SACD disc. I listen to it often. They have a warmer sound without losing all that glorious detail that Nick Davis brought out in the mixes. I almost feel that the middle box was somehow not mastered right.....it just doesn't sound like other work that Nick has done for Genesis......just weird.

Amazon.co.uk also has this box set in stock for about £72.

I've ordered from them twice and have been happy both times with the service.

EDIT: Just saw your post, Gene. Is that the Amazon price that you to which you were referring?

Okay, you all got me curious enough that I just ordered them from Amazon UK.

BTW, the Amazon UK page says £71.98, but when I added it to my basket, it showed up as £61.26. With shipping and the exchange rate, it cost me just under $107.

I like how they have a "basket" instead of a "cart." Makes me realize the things that I get used to.

BTW, I actually got my discs last Saturday. Pretty quick, seeing as how they had to cross the pond. I haven't really listened to them. I flipped through a couple of them, but they didn't really do it for me.
