Halon's new stuff...

Been gone a while guys/gals - during my absence I've acquired a few new things to spruce up my little HT system a bit, so figured I would just post some new pics in a new thread altogether since it's been about a year since my last. I do have some SCS-01's on the way to replace the front L/R speakers, but pictured here is the new Pioneer Elite AVR - and I decided I would start focusing a little more on the aesthetics and looks with an upgrade to the credenza as well. Also, since my last pics, I've wall mounted the Panny, which allowed me to bring the center channel speaker up to a more reasonable position than before. The Pioneer's MCACC feature is pretty cool, but I've found that I'll still break out the old SPL meter and tweak it a little more even beyond that - overall it rocks! And now looks good too! :D

Eh, the picture quality isn't the best - had to take them on my phone, my digital camera is broken right now. :(

Nice and COZY. Better pictures would help. But, I get the gist.

Thanks - yes I agree. I'll post better pictures eventually, but for now this is best I can do! :)

Wall mounted with the center on the rack is the way to go :) Looking good.

Very clean setup.:) To me, equipment looks good as long as its well kept. I hate sloppy wire management and stuff all over the place.

Make sure to play with placement when the SCS-01s come. Looks like you have some room on either side to move the speakers out a bit, which would also allow you to try moving them forward off the wall a bit to see how that sounds.

Have you tried some other subwoofer placements?

If your into aesthetics, another thing is to use some thick speaker cable and then wrap them with tech-flex and heatshrink the ends, terminate with bananas. Then on the floor the speaker cable is bigger, but it looks cool and doesn't cost very much. I had a two channel speaker system setup like this for a while at my old place and always got compliments on it.

You should get a lot more midrange. I have gone a similar upgrade path where I had some 2-ways and upgraded to the MTM version from the same line. Though they have the same -3dB at the bottom, the increase in midrange is very noticeable and that is why I tend to recommend the SCS-01s up front vs just the SBS-01s in most cases. The +2dB between the SCS and SBS in sensitivity confirms the additional output as well.

Actually what you see pictured here is the end result of my latest round of speaker/sub rearranging. Before I had the sub placed inside the left main and perpendicular to the wall - seems as if I had some issues with reflected waves that were playing havoc with my low end, so I decided to move it out and put it at an angle as you see. I wanted to keep the sub closer to the front soundstage however, so this ended up pushing my mains in a lot more than they used to be.

Now, that said - when I'm seated on the couch and listening to a soundtrack/music, whatever - overall it sounds much better than before; the bass is tight, controlled, and I've yet to really perceive a significant difference in the width of the soundstage. Noticeable yes, but it still seems very open and most importantly... accurate.

I'll probably experiment a little more here and there, just for kicks - plan on getting a Great Gramma pad for the sub at some point to further decouple it from the hardwood flooring, and may push it further to the left so I can open up the mains a little more again.

As for the speaker cable - you can't see them, but I use basic 12 gauge Belden from Blue Jeans, heat shrink wrapped at the ends where I stripped away the outer jacket - terminated with standard banana plugs from Radio Shack, so nothing special there. They lay nicely on the floor and run along the baseboard into the back of the credenza. Works for me. ;)

Nice job!

Nice and clean. I like the speaker stands sitting away from the walls.

Looks like you have some really nice equipment.

Thanks! :) Yeah, I clearly had to do something with the older setup - had the old open glass top flat panel stand thing which unfortunately played havoc with my efforts at cable management and keeping them out of view. The new credenza looks much better, and matches my other furniture nicely. As an unexpected bonus 'effect' - I've got my APC HT power filter/suppressor on the floor directly underneath the cabinet (no other place to put it really). When I turn the lights off in the room to watch a movie, the blue LED lights on the APC unit give the whole credenza some neat 'ground effect lighting'. Not enough to be bothersome though, just noticeable.

Very nice!
Wall mounting makes all the difference; don't you think?
I'll bet if you stop drinking your pictures won't be so shaky.:D j/k

Ha! Busted.. :( :D

Actually this was taken with me in a semi-squatting position so I could get the phone closer to the receiver, and right about the time I took it the dog rear ended me. :p I'll find my other digital camera (the cheaper one) and do these over... for crying out loud... :D
