Do I need a CD Player? Is there a Difference?

I am looking to buy a Blu Ray player. My question is: Can I find a blu ray player that will be as good playing CD's as it will be for DVD's and Blu Ray discs, or will I need to purchase a separate CD player? I am not sure whether the quality components built into a $1000 blu ray player will also be as good for CD's? Any opinions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am currently using a Yamaha 3800 receiver.

Thanks
Reg

Hi, Reg. Do you plan on using an analog or digital connection between the player and your Yamaha? If you're using digital, then there is no reason to consider paying extra for upgraded DACs in a player.

If you're using analog, then I can't speak to that. I've never gotten into the $1000 disc player world, but some people here have.

Thanks for your reply. If I understand you correctly - I am using an HDMI cable then the Yamaha is doing the processing so it would be a waste to spend more than a couple of hundred on a Blu Ray Player.

That's my belief, yes.

I agree with Adam on this. By using HDMI you are using the DACs in the receiver and not the player. One of the best BD players for both CD and BD if you want to use the analog outs (for CDs) would be the Pioneer BDP-05FD. or the 51FD They have Wolfson DACs and is very highly rated for CD playback. They work even better when you hook it up to a Pioneer rcvr. It's not the top rated BD machine because of being slow and sometimes glitchy, but the upconversion, BD and CD quality are top notch.
