My Mother-in-Law Makes Me Nuts!

My mother, due to her mother, had the same ideas about what she should be able to say to her children even though grown & get away with.

The problem was is that she raised us to believe that respect worked both ways. So needless to say as I grew up, I couldn't & wouldn't put up with anything that came flying out of my mothers mouth & I let her know it.

After I made this known to her our relationship changed for the better. She then saw me as an adult in my own right. Until your wife makes this distinction, there will be discord.

So whether your wife likes confrontation or not, it is up to HER to take a stand & let her mother know that she is a married adult & that she & YOU are both to be treated with respect by her. If her mother cannot comply with this RESPECTFULLY made request, then it is up to your WIFE to ask her mother to butt the **** out & don't interfere in the 2 of yours business!

So while it might be you that is bearing the brunt of your MIL's attitude, it is really up to your WIFE to settle it once & for all.

After this I think you would be TOTALLY within your right to COMPLETELY STOP any and all aid financial & otherwise that you offered to your ungrateful MIL!

The wife and I had very long talk about her mother's current behavior, and told my wife she needs to deal with her mother. I took the advice that some have gave and went back through my records and I have spent more money on her mother than I thought in the past 10yrs, after I saw the price tag I'm done, So I showed the wife the amount and she went nuts I have never seen my wife lose it like this ever. She now understands why I refuse to apologize to her mother who is ungrateful. I told my wife that her mother received her last penny from me I will not under any circumstances give her any more money she is on her own, I said hell don't you have a brother who should be helping out his mother, well it's his turn now. So my wife went to her mother's house (which is really mine after all the money came from me to fix it) and told her she screwed up and bit the hand that fed her and because of that she is now to take care of her own bills. Well on a lighter note Hey Adam looks like that position has a vacancy.:D:D

I'm pretty lucky as I got a good MIL. My wife is the one who has to deal with the aggravation from my side of the family. I certainly do not defend them when they're in the wrong or attacking my wife and I'm glad your wife ultimately didn't either.

I think you did the right thing. Some people you just can't win with. I don't subscribe to that "it is family" bs anyway. Family or not they have to respect you. I once threw my ex-FIL out of the house for very much the same stuff you described. My current MIL is such a b@#$h that my wife won't even talk to her.
