Folks, found this article about the top 10 films for 2009. It looks like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is going to win out over Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by a considerable margin. That is, Transformers took in $402,111,870 dollars whereas the latest Harry Potter took in $301,959,197 respectively.

Up finished 3rd taking in $293,004,164 followed closely by The Twilight Saga: New Moon with $280,924,000 AND The Hangover finishing with $277,322,503. Shockingly, Star Trek is ranked 6th place raking in $257,730,019. Personally, I thought Star Trek would be ranked a bit higher.

The surprise of the year thus far would have to be the film Avatar. Currently ranked at #7 taking in $212,268,000 already even though only being out a few weeks. I am most certain Avatar will move up the ranks some more before 2009 comes to a close. For those interested, here is a link:

Hope many of you find this interesting. It has been a good year at the box office imho. The special effects are getting better and better. Both video and audio seems to be improving as well. As such, I hope the trend continues in 2010! You can bet I will be at the theater quite often at that. ;);)

Cheers,

Phil

I was thinking this, but someone posted it at that site already:
"Highest Grossing" doesn't translate to "Top Movies"
Very true. Plus, highest box office doesn't mean highest grossing (with disc sales and rentals playing a much larger role these days).

Nothing against the thread, Phil! Just some thoughts.

True, but I found the article interesting. Not sure why District 9 is not even mentioned. I thoroughly enjoyed that one. As such, figured it would rank in the Top 5 anyways. Oh well, what do I know.................hehe. Hope all is well with you and the pooch my friend. ;):);)

I thought you were going to ask for our list of 10, and I'm glad you didn't, because I don't think I've seen 10 movies this year that qualify as "good".

I see. I listed the Top 3 list here in another one of my threads here:
You mentioned both Avatar and Sherlock Holmes in the post as well... Would you keep your list as is having seen them now?

Edit: Nevermind, I kept reading... :)

Sherlock Holmes was outstanding. Saw it on Christmas day. Fantastic acting by all three principals (Downey, Law, McAdams), and they did an outstanding job recreating the dreariness of the Industrial Revolution period in London (e.g. lots of smoke and soot). Brilliant film.

As for best of the year, DVD verdict is one of my favorite review sites for rating DVDs and BDs. Here is their top 10 for the year- http://www.dvdverdict.com/goldengavel2009.

AVATAR Domestic Total as of Dec. 28, 2009: $232,129,323

I predict that by the end of Dec 31st, 2009, Avatar will reach $300,000,000 Domestically. It might even beat that Harry Potter stuff.

And by the time it's done (2010), it will beat the crap out of Transformers 2.:D

I agree 100%! There really is no telling how much Avatar will take in. However, there are a couple more films that look quite promising on the horizon. One is The Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman. The other is Legion. I am certain both will give Avatar a run for the money. As always, only time will tell. ;);) Have a great 2010 my friend.

I will watch both "Eli" & "Legion" for sure, and I will most likely get both on blu-ray, but I doubt that either will even beat Sherlock Holmes at the Box Office.:D

Avatar has an "A" Yahoo User rating (over 23,600 ratings) and an "A-" Critics rating, which translates to A LOT of repeat viewings, especially during the Holidays season.:D

Go AVATAR!!!!!:):D

Interesting perspective. Yeah, I admit I watched Avatar twice which is something that I hardly EVER do. In fact, that may have been the first time ever seeing the same movie two times at the theater. I have done that by way of theater, then once again on a rental. Even then, the movie has to be spectacular to say the least. That should tell you something about Avatar. The IMAX 3-D was the most awesome theater experiences to date for me. However, I must say it was also a bit expensive. :):)

Just as we predicted, the 15-day run puts Avatar above $300,000,000, becoming the 2nd highest grossing film of 2009!:D

I saw Avatar again last night, by the way. My 7 yr old daughter actually sat through the entire film. And she clapped her hands in amazement throughout the film, especially at the end!

She thought it was an "AWESOME" movie.:D

And she said, "I can't wait for Avatar 2!":D
