I was going thru the Subwoofer Forum and came across someone who didn't have an LFE. So he had to hook the mains from the reciever to the sub, and then to the main speakers. He was told that is how the sub works best. If that is the case what reason is there for the LFE?

I have a receiever with no subwoofer pre out jack, so I ran my mains to the sub to give the subwoofer signal, and then hook up my mains to the sub as a passive connection, and the subwoofer has it's own crossover.

Because the LFE, if you're even getting it to begin with, is tremendously reduced in signal to protect both receiver's amp and speakers. When the receiver is sending out the high energy LFE via speaker terminals, it can't possibly know that there is some 2000w sub amp that will be in line to help out (ok that doesn't matter anyways). I've heard receivers normally output 1/20 of this LFE energy. As in only 5%. I don't know if that's for certain, or how common that figure might be.

Now this may be counter-intuitive, but to even get LFE through your main speaker terminals, however reduced the signal, you need to turn sub/LFE as OFF in the receiver.

I may have misled you. I have an LFE out, that I used with the Acoustimass 15s from my Yamaha HTR-5280. Now that I bought 5 Definitive Mythos 2s and a Polk Sub Micro 1000, is it still better to use the LFE, or go to Mains on the Sub then to the Main Speakers. Which would be best. It's not all hooked up yet.

hook your sub to the sub out (lfe .1) and set all your speakers to small and the lfe to sub. Start with a 80hz crossover and go from there.
