Which Bookshelf for Music?

I am considering the Ascend Acoustics Sierra-1 and the Aperion 6. Both are direct from the manufacturer. I have a 130 watt Yamaha receiver, and I will be using it for 80% music. I am looking for a tight bass (do not need deep bass) and clean highs . Budget is under $1000. Which speaker would you recommend?

Thanks

The Polk LSi9 for under 1000 dollars is a nice speaker.

The ATC SCM7 is far and away the best small bookshelf I have heard by a substantial margin. I bet if you contact dealers you will get a pair for under a grand.

They are one of the best speaker bargains I know of and fit your description of what you want exactly.

I heard my brother in law's pair recently and was thoroughly impressed, and I'm not easily impressed by commercial speakers.

These speakers are absolute gems.

That is a good deal also, however the SCM7 are in a class of their own in terms of the presentation of a bookshelf speaker.

ATC are a long established company that has catered to the professional market with excellent studio monitors, especially the active one.

This SCM series is their first serious entry into the consumer market. I agree with reviewers who say that have hit the ball way out of the park.

The Quads will have a more extended bass response though.

Only your ears can decide what you like. Why not order both and return the loser? My impression of both is that the Aperion's are more forward, but interestingly not more detailed. The Ascends convey a ton of detail and are capable of putting out good bass.

When my tax return comes I'm probably going to pick up a used pair of Sonus Fabers or Ascend Acoustics Sierra 1's. Right now I'm using a pair of Onix Ref 1's and while I love the sound with my tube amps, it could be better.

In a similar situation I ended up with Paradigm Studio 40's. The pair of 5.25" drivers extends reasonably low.

I second that from Jerry though I
you could also look at the studio 20s both are exceptional speakers. Check audiogon.com eBay and craiglist. You are more likely to get a better speaker and stay under your grand price cap

I do think the 20's sound better than the 40's when paired with a sub: but they don't go as low alone. Likely not a problem for near-filed (get the 20's), but *if* I were trying to fill a room with only two speakers, and those two speakers were bookshelves....

These would be a great set of book shelves. I realize they are not the most popular speakers on this forum, but myself and other who own these great speakers from MB Quart all love them. These would leave you some extra money at the end to purchase nice sub to integrate with if you were interested in that avenue.

Good luck.
