Grammas & Components

I have some research to do before starting a 'which sub to buy' thread, but for now I have two probably Dumb questions:

1) I've heard good things about using Grammas for a subwoofer, I was wondering if they're recommended for all subs, or just certain types (e.g. would you want one with front-firing but not down-firing?)

2) I have the new Sony BDP-CX960 (great toy, btw) and it doesn't fit with my other components (it's 21.5" deep). I have it on a side table right where my sub will go, when I buy one. It looks like none of the subs I want will fit under the side table, but they'd be perfect size to put the BR player on. Would this be inadvisable due to vibration from the messing up DVD playback? I saw a thread about putting fronts on top of a sub and thought I'd throw this out there.

In my experience they are an added bonus to both down firing and front firing subs. I am using one now with my down firing sub and it works great especially on a hard wood floor.

I would certainly not recommend this as it will almost surely have some cabinet resonance that will disrupt the laser and prevent it from accurately reading the disc resulting in playback errors.

That you really want for your sub is not Gramma, but SubDude - this recent post goes on lengths with comments of happy owners.

About placing sub underneath your side table - Lets say you find nice 8" sub and place it under your Mega DVD changer - Bass output it typicaly omni-directional and being such close proximity to source (sub) i think vibrations might be in issue, plus acoustically, sub placement under the table might not be the optimal location anyways

Gramma and SubDude are made by the same company and are literally the exact same thing just a different size. SubDudes are square and Gramma's are rectangular. I believe this is the only difference someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Well, most subs are square Not sure about other differences...

krzy is correct - same basic item, just different shapes for different needs.

Ordered the Gramma, I'm still in the air on sub choices but the main contenders (SVS PB12-NSD, HSU VTF 3.3, Outlaw LFM1 EX) all fit better on the Gramma footprint than the SubDude.

Bummer about the BR placement on the woofer, but I kind of figured that would be the answer.

Also in reconsidering my room layout it looks like dual subs (at some future point) would actually fit. More research fun for me! Still not ready to post my 'Help me choose' thread, as there is a lot I can learn from existing threads first.

I just got a great gramma for Christmas for my SVS PB13-Ultra and while I haven't watched any movies yet since I've placed my sub on it, it does seem to help from what I've noticed so far.
