Hi guys,
I have a 12 volt trigger output on my Onkyo TX-SR702 receiver, manual says to use this output connected to a 12 volt trigger input on a power amp in Zone 2. when Zone 2 is turned on, a 12 volt trigger signal is output. I just purchased a stereo amp to drive the mains in a 5.1 setup which is equipped with a 12 volt trigger input. Can I use the receiver's trigger to power up the external amp, if so what cable do I use and how do I configure the reciever to turn the amp on? The reason I ask is I will not be using in a Zone 2 application. Thanks in advance to all who respond.

Hi, Jeff. Looks like that trigger is only switched with the Zone 2 power. So, if you can turn Zone 2 on and have it be toggled on/off using the master power switch (i.e. Zone 2 comes on when you turn the receiver on and turns off when you turn the receiver off), then it would work like a normal trigger. I don't know if Zone 2 will turn back on when the receiver is turned back on, after you've gone into standby.

The type of cable that you'd use is one like this except with mono jacks on the ends (I can't remember if stereo jacks will work with a trigger).

Because the 702 has switched power outlets on the back, you can also use a technique such as this one (wow, that took a while to find that thread. :))

Hi Adam, I just went into receiver initial setup menu and clicked Hardware, I have the option to activate the powered zone 2 or not. Do you think if I select zone 2 on this will activate the trigger? I believe by selecting the on option it will stay that way until I change it. Thanks Jeff
I don't understand the AC/DC converter thing that Mike C. used but I think I can just use the option above.

Jeff, the "powered" Zone 2 option is for running speakers in Zone 2 off of the internal amplifiers in the 702. You'd want to choose the other option.

I was referring to turning Zone 2 on, and whether it would stay on when you cycled power on the receiver. I believe that you can check that out without connecting anything. After telling it to run Zone 2 off of an external amp, turn Zone 2 on. The Zone 2 indicator light on the front panel should light up. Then, turn the receiver off - does the Zone 2 indicator light turn off? If so, I'll bet that the 12V trigger will turn the amp off. Now, turn the receiver back on - does the Zone 2 indicator light turn on? If so, then I'll bet that the 12V trigger will turn the external amp back on. If either the Zone 2 light doesn't shut off when the receiver goes into standby, or doesn't turn back on when you turn the receiver back on, then my bet is that the 12V trigger won't do what you want.

I actually did the same thing that Mike did to run my amps off of my Pioneer VSX-1015. If your trigger doesn't work out for you, I (and others here) will be happy to help you set it up using the switched outlet. It's actually very easy to do.

Adam, sorry I didn't get back till now, I tried what you said and the receiver's display said powered zone 2 on and you are right, it's the amp in the 702 that's powered on. So I need to do what you and others did using the switched outlet. I'm getting the amp on tuesday and would like to have an idea of what I need and what to do, I hope it is as easy as you say. Thanks Adam for taking the time to help.
I look forward to your reply...Jeff

Hey, Jeff. Gotcha, but you can set it up so that it uses the pre-amp outputs and the 12V trigger instead of using the internal amps. I'd be interested to know if the Zone 2 comes on and off with the receiver's main power if it's set up that way. So, I say let's give that a try before you worry about getting the equipment to do that switched outlet method. Sound good?

So, using page 77 of the owner's manual as a guide, set the "Powered Zone2" to "Not Activated." Then check if the Zone 2 indicator comes on and off (I believe that you'll still need to turn on Zone 2 using the procedure shown on page 78 of the manual).

Adam, I think I got it, Power Zone 2 not activated in setup menu, Then I hit zone 2 on remote and power on light comes on and stays on and then I can toggle the power on and off, so in other words I can just use the Zone 2 trigger to turn on the external amp and then turn off the zone 2 after the amp is on. So all I need is the cable to connect the triggers. Adam you have been so helpful, I read that part of manual but didn't understand till you explained it. Do you think my local Radio Shack will have that cable?
Thank you so much my friend.

Glad that this seems to be working! Hopefully it does what you want it to once it's all hooked up. :)

...and then turn off the zone 2 after the amp is on.
Just to be clear, if you turn off Zone 2, the trigger will shut the amp off.

I'd be really surprised if they didn't. Again, I don't know if stereo jacks work - I know that mono jacks do work. You can always get adapters (that RS does sell) to go from a stereo jack to a mono jack, or even from RCA jacks to mono minijacks. So many options... :D

Thank you so much my friend.
You're more than welcome, Jeff. I just hope that we can get this all set up for you so that you can enjoy that new amp!

So I just leave the Zone 2 on, select input and go from there, then hit Zone 2 and power off to shut all down?

This cable is confusing me, on rear of 702 trigger out looks like it would accept male 1/8" mini plug, so would not the other end be 1/8 male plug to the amp's trigger input? Adam I'm asking because I really don't know, so please forgive my ignorance.

What I'm hoping is that once you turn Zone 2 on, it will power up and down with the main receiver power (i.e. you'd never hit the Zone 2 power button again). That's what I was trying to get at earlier with the experiment.

Sorry if I made it more confusing. The trigger on the receiver is a 1/8" male minijack. I know that a mono 1/8" male minijack will work - I don't know if a stereo 1/8" male minijack will work. I'm assuming that your amp with also have a 1/8" male minijack input for the trigger, but it might take two bare wires like my amps do (just let us know and we'll talk you through it). The adapters that I mentioned were just to let you know about some options if you can't find a mono 1/8" male minijack to mono 1/8" male minijack cable.

Adam, I finally got it right (knucklehead) you're right, once I turn Zone 2 on I don't have to touch it again, it does power up and down with the receiver, OK that's solved. Thanks.

No need to apologize, it doesn't take much to confuse me!!! Yes my amp that's coming does have the same 1/8 mini input. I do understand what your trying to say now. I will see if I can find mono 1/8" mini cable, if not can I use a stereo cable with adapter. Adam, I know it's getting late and I've taken too much of your time as it is, so we can continue this after I've done some leg work to see what I can come up with. Thanks again for all.

Jeff, never worry about taking my time! The others here are probably just happy that it keeps me from posting something strange in another thread. :D

Have a good one! I look forward to seeing if it works.

Adam, that's comforting to know and I appreciate it. I will keep you informed of my progress. Good night and have a Happy and Blessed Christmas.
