Turn PS3 into a laptop

Yeah I wound up sending it to Sony, but one of the first things I tired before even taking it apart and trying to fix it, was to turn it on and off a bunch of times (and hope it was a fluke) and then doing the fan test because I was scrounging through info desperately online and someone said it would work (which it didnt) then I opened it up and tried all the other fixes with no luck, and then sent it to Sony and they just replaced it with a new launch ps3.

I hope you told this person they were wrong as wrong could be. I discourage anyone from using the fan test for cleaning the dust from inside the console, but using the fan test to fix YLOD that is a new one to me.

Yeah I made sure to put input on anything I saw as to how it didn't work. I was desperate and willing to try anything, kind of like how people are convinced jamming a pen in the 360's fan, wrapping it with a towel and then running it for 3 hours makes it work again after RROD...

The crap they are telling people to do with the 360 is just plain dumb. It makes no sense to stick a pen in the fan and wrap a towel around it and run it for 3 hours if it sound like BS it is. The fan test is different in that it seemed to make sense at the time,because there wasn't a theory on what might be the causes of YLOD. But in the case of the 360 those suggestions don't sound like a good ideal to do with any electronics which IMO should be common sense.

I think the idea is to reflash the board with the towel thing, but no electronic device is going to get hot enough to really do that just because the fans aren't spinning. There's TONS of RROD "Fixes" out there that just obviously cause the problem to be worse, or do nothing. Plus Microsoft is doing the 3 year thing for the warranty if there is a RROD. The only thing you could use the towel trick for logically would be to cause it to red ring when you only have one light so that it is covered under warranty. My only xbox failure was the E73, which was something like "ethernet cable issue" which for some reason made it not work... go figure, then they fixed it under warranty, and everything was good.

That is the one thing Microsoft did right for their customers. Sony on the other hand did not even offer a extended warranty or even wants to admit there is a problem because the % of YLOD is so small. I believe something like 1%.

YEah but when you become one of those 1% it'd be nice if they covered it. Supposedly Sony says on any PS3's made after a certain point that they have fixed the issue that causes the YLOD but don't say what it is. I'm guessing it's general Hardware failure, but no actual cause is listed yet.

There is a theory which I posted in my other thread from a guy I talk to on another forum.

I definitely think it's a flaw in the design process. The chips are mounted upside down in the case and heat rises. Over time it would cause them to come loose. The Apple Macbook's had a similar problem with their graphics chip, which was also mounted on the underside of the mainboard. I would recommend that people keep their PS3's vertical rather than horizontal (most PCs are like that)

He makes a good argument, take what he say's and the fact that when you and I opened our PS3's and got a look a that dry thermal paste it starts looking like this could be a very good possibility and I am sure we are not the only ones who had dry thermal paste and there are people out there who have it still and just don't know about it.

I wouldn't want to put lights on my videogame system. I'd think it be too distracting from what I'm playing. I already have a controller that lights up bright green for my Ps3, but it lights up so bright you can use that instead of turning on the lights in the room, and you'll be able to see everything. It's WAY too distracting, makes you keep looking down at your hands...

and as for the thermal paste, on a couple things I noticed it was completely gone where it should have been and was in the form of small white flakes sitting in the bottom of the case or lodged in that huge fan.

I just think it's cool but crazy not something I would do but it is interesting what mod ideals people come up with. I wouldn't be surprise to see an aftermarket case for the PS3. When you got the refurb back from Sony did you change thermal paste?

No, they gave me a new one with a new warranty that's good for another year, so I'm not about to open it yet Once next July rolls around, I'll pop it open and check out what's up. As for the case of the Ps3, I have seen that you can just buy the Japanese white edition case and swap everything over. I just don't like that it looks like some kind of Futuristic VCR or beta player.

I have to agree,everything I own is black and throwing in a white PS3 would be distracting.
