I think I hurt my brain trying to think of something for you yesterday, and the HDMI splitter or switcher for that matter crossed my mind . . . but how would that help you here? You would still need another HDMI cable to the TV . . . Right? I could very well be missing something.
Bill, I say either always use the HT (c'mon you paid for that quality, use it, and it's good for your electronics/speakers to be used for longevity's sake AFAIK), or find a different cable box that doesn't require fiddling.
I predict only a 0.5% chance I can find something, but will you please tell me your particular location (nearest large city), and your cable provider?
AFAIK, some of my friends have to keep bothering their service providers for a better cable box, and eventually they get one (rather than some formerly broken, now barely refurbished cable box, with a bad IR sensor, DVI rather than HDMI, etc).
