Me and EVERYONE else who isn't a Giants fan will keep calling Tomlinson LT and I hope it pisses you off to no end. It's pretty damn silly that you guys get all bent over a damn nickname.

I've always called Ladanian "LDT". I think that's a cool nickname and a nice alternative.

I'm not a Giants or Chargers fan, and Taylor retired when I was only 11 years old.

That said, to me, "LT" is Lawrence Taylor. I never liked Tomlinson being called LT.

When there's a football player who is probably one of the 5 greatest to ever play the game on either side of the ball, no one is allowed to take over his nickname, at least not unless that player is also one of the greatest to ever play. And while Tomlinson was a great running back, he was never that great.

LT's career isn't over and he's already broken just about every meaningful record there is for a running back. Announcers REGULARLY call him HOF LT. Up until the last couple of seasons, LT was on pace to surpass Emmitt Smith for all-time yards. To say Tomlinson isn't that great is just stupid. I bet you think Reggie Bush is better.

Tomlinson is a hall of famer, no question. All I am saying is that it is lame that he uses a nickname of one of the best football players of all-time. It would be like calling all those good Ravens defenses the "Steel Curtain".

It is not even a farging nicname it is and always be their initials, I think a guy can use his initials even if some one else did it first, with a long name like LaDanian I think it was just too easy to go with the LT, and so we have it. These are the man's initials and he surely can use them as he feels fit to do.
I am sure that the original LT prolly could care even less than this forum does, if he even realizes it has happened, he is kinda short of the top floor, and totally befuddled with many other issues .

This was made before 2000 clearly. The 2nd and 3rd best RB of all time played in the 90s.

they both are great football players and both can be called LT. I don't think Lawrence Taylor minds the new LT being called LT. I know I don't mind when another JD does well. There is a fraternity in a name. Instant friendship and the recognition that others doing well honor your memory too. Of course the current LT is currently 3rd at his position IMO, but every great RB has a slow down or early retirement.

if you want to list top 5 players all time I think your list has to be chocked full of great lineman, nose tackles, and middle linebackers

Edit: Oh yeah. Not a fan of Madden. I don't even bother to listen to what he says. He did a good job as a coach in his day, but I could never get into his anouncing style.

He drove me nuts.

LOL. I thought he was a fun guy. He started slipping once he got up in age though. Pat Summerall was my favorite with that rich play-by-play voice. Although my favorite call of all time is the Holy Mackerel one in the NCAA tournament. It probably helps when a guy announces your teams glory years though.

I will admit that the guy had/has a lot of personality. I'm sure I'd enjoy having a beer and talking with him (celebrity or not). He had a, love him or hate him, type of style for announcing though. His habit of contradicting himself so much put him in my second category.

IMO Phil Simms is getting to be very good. He sucked @ss the first season or two, but he's really come around. Each time I hear him, he impresses me with his football knowledge. He'll see a play and make a comment (maybe the spot was wrong, or that he was down before a fumble) and when played back in slo-mo he'll say, "oops, I was wrong there." I agree on Simms. His play by play guy is a good fit for his style too. He makes comments that are intelligent. I think moose and the goose are the best team on fox. Sadly I get Joe Buck for football and baseball.

We end up with Troy most of the time. He seems to dislike the Giants. Any time they do something good, it was because the other team screwed up or that the Giants got lucky. Anytime they do something bad (which has been a lot lately) he says how it's indicative of how bad this team has become. After a while, It gets on my nerves.

I find Troy honest...He'll rip the Cowboys. Being an Eagles fan it's funny...Troy and Phil were enemies but not hated like most the other Cowboys and Giants. So it's not difficult to like them as announcers.

The sad thing is that Madden is more known these days for his announcing and for his video game, but he was one of the best coaches to ever come through the NFL. I remember reading an article that said he had the best winning percentage of any coach who coached for more than 100 games.

His stats are pretty incredible- 10 years of coaching, 8 years of making the playoffs, 103-32-7 for a 76% winning percentage (his worst season was 9-7!!), 9-7 playoff record (including some heartbreaking losses to the Steelers and Broncos), and 1 super bowl ring.

The guy was simply amazing at understanding how football worked and how plays came together.

There was an outstanding book written by a former ABC and CBS sports producer named Terry O'Neal (for the life of me I cannot find it anywhere and don't remember the title) who was the main architect of the rebirth of CBS sports in the early 80s. In this book he wrote about CBS football and Madden, and how Madden was the first user of the telestrator- which is a pretty revolutionary change to the way we watch football. Instead of just showing a camera angle with a few players in the shot, they showed a coaches film view- with all 22 players on the field and Madden diagramming the play. The first thing ever diagrammed was the concept of a Cover 2 defense.

Madden's greatest talent IMO was his ability to get the most out of his players. His teams were made up of the misfits from other teams. Guys who were great players but made TO seem like a Boy Scout. Somehow, he got them all to play together as a team and to win as a team, instead of a group of spoiled brats. He was also good at teaching them how to get away with late hits. "It's only against the rules if they catch you."

He was a great coach and announcer. He deserved the hall of fame. I think the guys is very smart too. Retiring when he knows it's time to move on.

Still the greatest coach of all time is Bill Walsh in my book.
