This is my first forum post, so hope people will understand and provide advice:

I am in the market for a new 7.1 channel speaker set (including sub woofer), I have a denon 1910 (7.1) channel receiver.

I have read a lot about speakers on this site, here are what I have so far:

1. Bose - Lot of bad reviews regarding marketing and hype
2. Paradigm
3. Boston Acoustics
etc.

My question to the this forum is, what are the different brands that are rated very good in this segment (price range $1500).

If this is already covered in this forum (I have not seen an exhaustive list), it would be great.

I recognize that speakers need to be "heard", however, I would like to solicit personal views and preferences.

PS: I want to focus on speakers that others already feel are very good. Right now from where I stand, I only know of Bose (malls etc marketing). I have come to know of paradigm only when I browsed thro' these forums.

Bose is over priced for what you get and their small speaker systems really lack depth for mid and low frequencies. I have had a lot of previous experience with Bose and their 901s are actually pretty good. But i would not recommend any of the Bose Acousitmass or Cinemate speaker systems.

Paradigm has various levels of pricing. You could get seven(7) Atom monitor v.6 speakers for about $825 That would leave $569 for PB12-NSD SVS subwoofer and $50 for monoprice cables with $100 left over.

I am not that familiar with Boston Acoustics. I aeard they are pretty good.

SVS makes excellent subwoofers, but more important they make agood 7.1speakers system. S-Series SBS-01 Systems http://svsound.com/products-sys-sbs_black.cfm $999

Defintive Technology makes a good 7.1 speakers system. The ProCinema 800 is $1199 and the ProCinema 100 is $1595. You can usually get 15-20% off these prices.

Audioholics Online store has several very good EMP speaker systems in your price range. $1595 for the EMP Impression 7.1 Tower System. http://store.audioholics.com/section/66386/1/7-1-tower-speaker-packages

If you can audition the systems with your favorite CDs in adem oroom as close to your room size as possible.

Lots of good recommendations so far. I don't think I saw Infinity on the lists, so that's another one to consider. Are you dead set on 7.1 to start with? If you find something you like that is a little above your price range, I'd recommend starting with 5.1 or even 3.1. It might actually save you money in the long run. That's the advice I wish I had been given when I started this hobby.

As far as Polk goes, the Monitor 60/70's with a decent sub will make a great 2.1 setup for music and come in well under the competition. Value to dollars, you can't beat em.

If you are looking at Polk's and plan to get a subwoofer, I would recommend the RTiA (formerly RTi) series bookshelfs rather than the Monitor (replaced with TSi I believe) series. I have both the RTi 4 and Monitor 60 in my house, and much prefer the sound of the RTi even though it is a much, much smaller speaker.

I'm sure someone will recommend buying 3-4 pairs of Behringer 2030P and a nice sub any minute now...

I personally like the sound of Def Techs and NHT.:D

NHT 30-day Return Policy (free S/H over $300):

We want you to be completely satisfied with your purchases from www.nhthifi.com. If for some reason, you are not completely satisfied, you may return your product(s) within 30 days of the initial order date for a full refund of the actual purchase price including the shipping charges.

I would just get FIVE of these:
http://store.nhthifi.com/Absolute-Zero-White_2?sc=12&category=1210

and ONE of these:
http://store.nhthifi.com/Twelve?sc=12&category=1210

I personally don't see any advantage of 7.1 over 5.1, but everyone is different.:D

Or Def Tech speakers on Amazon.com:

Five of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Definitive-Technology-ProMonitor-Bookshelf-Speaker/dp/B000TD6QLK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1260895624&sr=1-3

One of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Definitive-Technology-ProSub-Speaker-Single/dp/B000TD8XO8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1260895712&sr=1-1

When I buy things directly from amazon and want to return them for free shipping, I select the Reason as "Not compatible" or "Not as described".

Or you could buy some nice speakers from Audioholics Web Store:

Hsu Research

SSRI 1,

If you want 7.1, look at Hsu Research Enthusiast 3 for $1600.

But, I also concur with others in this thread: go with 5.1 at first.

If you choose the Enthusiast 2 and then upgrade to the larger sub (the VTF 3 MK 3) you are right at $1550.

Remember to factor in shipping. My system (see signature) was $200 shipping.

The major internet direct brands often mentioned in this community are very reliable and you get so much more "bang for your buck."

Thanks everyone for their patient inputs !! Really did not expect this much response in such a short time, this forum is the best one I have seen in my 15 years on the internet.

I think I am now clear on the brands that I need to look for that are decent. Now the tougher question is, how to choose between them. I have read a lot about this on the internet, and seems like the general direction is that we need to "hear" these side by side to say which one is better. Practically speaking this is not easily possible (atleast I am not aware of any stores that carry all these products).

So my next question would be, how did you guys make the decision ? Online reviews ? Looks like some people talk about frequency, ohms, and decibels. with that kind of terminology, I am lost :)

As a novice in this field, is there a sure shot decision that gets me atleast 90% of a decent home theatre speaker system ?

BTW, as people suggested, I can get started with a 5.1 system and upgrade to a 7.1, however, I want the flexibility to just buy the remaining 2 speakers when I am upgrading, not any other component in the 5.1 system.

PS: Apparently Bose will not allow to buy a single speaker - the rep at the showroom was very clear on this one. They sell 6.1, we get 6.1, if we want the extra one speaker, I need to buy the whole set again. I hope this is not the case with other suggestions on this forum.

Thanks again for your replies.

There are a good group of guys here to try and help you out as much as we can. To my knowledge all the speakers listed here are sold in pairs or in singles. Now that you have a list of some of the best speakers on the market, this is where the hard part begins and IMO the most fun. Here is my 2 cents don't cheap out on the center speaker or the sub these 2 play a major role in your 5.1 HT setup. keep looking at reviews and ask the guys here. But with this list that myself and all the guys gave to you it would be hard to go wrong.

First a question - How big is your room. I ask because 7.1 is simply inappropriate for smaller rooms.

But to your quandary above:

It is a difficult proposition (and even more difficult if you live in a rural area) to audition speakers. Fortunately Internet Direct companies do offer some help on this count. For example, Aperion will actually pay return shipping and give you a full refund if you don't like their system, so it is free to try.

It is more typical to have to pay return shipping out of pocket.

One of the local audio shops in my area allowed me to buy a pair of speakers (they were open-box or showroom demo's) and return them with-in a week for a full refund. A couple of others were game to let me carry a pair of speakers into their shop and set them up for A-B comparisons. From a practical standpoint you should work with bookshelf models whenever possible. Most systems use the same drivers in their bookshelves as in their towers and at you price point, BS speakers will generally offer better sound quality.

In any case, you should start with a receiver and sub which will be permanent components of your system, then start auditioning pairs of speakers (ideally in your room and in a 2.1 configuration) to find your sound.

I would expect most ID companies to extend any package discount to you if you trialed a pair of speakers before committing to a 5 or 7 speaker package. Just explain what you are doing and ask up front (I'd ask by phone, but request a statement via email).

If you trial a pair of speakers and post what you do and don't like about them, you will get some good suggestions on which other speakers might be a better fit.

If you are not willing to invest the time and effort:
1) If you are not worried about looks, the Behringer 2030P's mentioned earlier are truly good speakers at an incredible price (which would give you more for your sub). They are made to be studio monitors and are sold by pro audio shops (that is guitar-amp-keyboard shops).
2) For more, but still in your budget are the Ascend CBM-170's (you could mix in 3 CBM-340's across the front depending on your sub budget).

From my observation, the two above speakers (Behringer 2030P and Ascend 170/340) are more recommended with less controversy than any others by members of this forum as speakers representing excellent value for their performance/cost.

Kew,

Thanks for the reply. I looked at the "Behringer 2030P", they are selling at around $129 a pair. Now as I admitted earlier, that I am novice in this field, looking at Bose for a price tag of $1600 verses this price (around $600 for all 5.1 speakers) , I am a little stunned.

I am sure that price does not always signal quality and reading these forums it is plenty clear that Bose is not among the best (can you confirm this ?).

My Room size is 15 feet by 24 feet (however, my TV area is only 15 feet by 13 feet).

I would like to buy the best speakers (5.1 speakers) for a maximum price tag of $1200 to $1600, I am not a big fan of upgrading in general and want to get the right ones to start with.

Thanks.

When Bose comes up as a topic with my audio-neophyte friends, I often opine that this brand is the most widely ridiculed in all of audio. I'd say Monster would be second to Bose, perhaps even a distant second.

The Behringers' value will be nigh impossible to beat. No grilles, fyi.

At least Monster makes cables that work well. They are just *tremendously* over-priced.

About the 2030p

Within their frequency range: they have as flat a response as has been tested anywhere even near the price. That means they will accurately reproduce sound. They also have an excellent off-axis response curve (they will accurately reproduce sound even if you aren't right in front of them).

They are not the prettiest, nor the smallest. There are some other excellent speakers in a similar range (though none spec quite as well).

Further, you may not like "flat". To some a flat response sounds somewhat dead. I can say, if you are going to buy speakers you've not heard, flat has the advantage of being the easiest to equalize.

I've discussed several times (stealing from WmAx), how to use a pair of subs with this setup and make full-range front speakers out of them ($270 in Dayton subs, $70 in a crossover, and perhaps an external 2-channel amp).

And there are some simple modifications to make that setup sound even better. Some $3 pillows in the subs, and some superglue in the speakers (http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showpost.php?p=412211&postcount=2)

At least Monster makes some cables that work well. Just yesterday I linked the AH 50 HDMI cable shootout, and specifically pointed out the $250 Monster cable that failed 3 out of 5 tests.
