So, I've been gone for a while. Just before I left there was some grumbling about political threads. I understand some don't prefer to debate politics but it seems pretty easy to tell what threads are about from their title. If you get into one by accident, you can always move on to something else.
Has political discussion been squelched in the Steam Vent?
Just wondering.

I don't think that it's been squelched because I still see the threads. I don't really get into those threads, though, so I might be missing a higher rate of them being closed/deleted.

Seriously, I have no life.
I don't think political threads need to be eliminated but I do think ground rules need to be observed. I also think people ought to read their text before posting and if they look back in less than an hour, they should edit if necessary. Angry posts lead to escalation and I think anyone who would post in a political thread should take a few deep breaths before reacting to what they read. These are not good times and real, workable solutions need to come to light.

I don't see a good reason to be able to give red chicklets at all, let alone doing it anonymously. That's like shooting spitballs from behind a tree.

While it's necessary to debate and discuss these issues, we still need to realize that this is a private forum and we're allowed to post here, at management's pleasure.

I think political threads should be allowed as long as liberals aren't allowed to participate... :p

I'm obviously joking. There have been some great discussions, but attacks just can't be allowed to continue. If, as a group, we can't be civil, then there's no reason for the privilege to be extended.

I would have to agree it would be great if that could happen but it's hard to have a good and civil debate on the issues when tempers flare, I myself am guilty of this more than once.

Yeah, audio's cool. I enjoy discussing it, too. However, I don't generally like doing it all day...and let's face it, I'm here all day. :D So, I enjoy the side discussions. The beautiful thing about the internet is, if I don't like what someone wrote, I just don't read it...or I go do something else for a while. It's not like I'm stuck in a room with someone shoving their opinion down my throat. To read or not to read - it's my choice. :)

*sigh*

Not a day goes by when a thread isn't started that won't eventually be closed for asking silly questions like "where did LOTRs go" or "IS THIS A TERRORIST DRY RUN? OMG OMG OMG!" or threads that will evolve into the premise of religious belief, feelings about our government, or whether or not our president is a facist muslim.

It might be one thing of it where focused all on one thread, that way we all knew which thread to avoid if we weren't interested in getting into a heated debate with a 19 asian/american troll.

Perhaps if we decidedly and truly want to avoid these kind of threads that we simply avoid anything from the steam vent all together. Of course you'd miss out on the fun of the boring threads, but you'd also avoid political debates and discussions about Tiger Woods' tee off in the bedroom.

end rant

Political threads can be a tough thing to control because they stir so much emotion from people. I do like to hear different positions on the subjects but when it get's ugly I just don't participate. If you can have a no tolerance rule for personal attacks then those type of threads can work fine.

I wonder if Seth's rant about what gets threads closed mentions enough things to actually get this one closed. :p

Or perhaps go the other way with a no-holds-barred cage match mentality.

That sure would make getting your point across easier.
