Manufacturers convincing people they are buying LED TVs that are still LCD!

That's bull. Not many know that they are still LCDs and that OLED is the only true LED TV.

On the flip side, most people wouldn't know the difference and couldn't care less what the technology is. They just care if it looks nice. That, and they like new stuff. LED-backlit LCDs are newer than flourescent-backlit ones.

It's not necessarily deceptive to call an LCD TV with an LED backlight an 'LED TV'. They are advertised that way to distinguish them from 'regular' LCD TVs that use a flourescent backlight. It's all about marketing and consumers hear the buzz about the new LED technology and make an assumption as to what that means.

Other examples of the same:

- When TVs with a full 1080p resolution first hit the market, many of them could not accept a 1080p input signal and there were similar cries of deception - claiming these TVs weren't really 1080p. But they WERE 1080p as that refers to the resolution of the screen itself - how many pixels the screen contains - and not the max resolution it can accept as input. But consumers assume that a TV advertised as 1080p must also accept 1080p as input.

- Receiver manufacturers advertise a receiver as '100 x 7' but then bench tests reveal that when all 7 channels are driven, the receiver can only ouput 50 watts per channel. Some people are up in arms and claim that the manufacturers are lying to us. But they are not - if you actually read the specs and learn how they are rated you see that the claim simply means there are 7 amps and each is capable of 100 wpc but the number was derived by driving only 2 channels simultaneously.

- Cable/satellite providers claiming 'digital quality' before digital broadcasts became mainstream. Consumers assumed that meant the channels were digital. But they weren't and technically they didn't say they were; they just implied that they are the same quality as a full digital channel.

Sorry, but IMO, if your gonna spend a grand or two on anything: do the research first.

I've heard of this new thing called the internet.

If somebody dupes into buying a high value item because you don't understand the terminology then it's shame on you, not on them.
