Yamaha rx-v1400 sound problem

My receiver seems to only work on the stereo modes. When a surround mode is selected I can barely hear any sound. It seems to be muted. On the Stereo mode I can receive full volume signals. I have checked the setup menus, I am not sure whether I have an internal problem, or a set up problem. If it is the DSP processor, can it be fixed or do I need to trash it.

TR,

Welcome to the forum. :)

A couple questions to help better frame the problem.

1) Is this AVR new to you, or have you owned it for some time?
I.e. was it working properly for you, and it recently exhibited the muted sound behavior?

2) What is your audio source component (CD player, DVD player, FM/AM, etc.)?
Also, please include make/model#:
Is the problem the same across different audio sources?

3) How is the source component connected to the AVR (RCA, Optical or Coaxial)?

4) What type speakers and what configuration (5.1, 7.1, etc.)?
Are you using a sub-woofer?

In the mean time, I downloaded the 1400's manual and will try to as Captain Renault would say "Round up the usual suspects" (Casablanca, 1942) :D

TR,

A couple questions on your AVR setup options:

1) When you say "Stereo mode", do you mean the "Direct Stereo" mode (this one bypasses DSP) or "2Ch Stereo" mode (this one uses DSP to include a subwoofer and/or downmix if necessary)? (p. 33)

2) Confirm the AVR is not inadvertently in "Night" mode. (p. 33)

3) Did you use YPAO (AUTO SETUP) or do it Manually? (p. 24 / p. 48)

4) What do you hear when you use the TEST signal for the various speakers? (p. 46)

5) Last thought: Did you recently change anything either component wise, wire/connection wise, or in the set-up ?

Cheers,

I bought it new 4 years ago, when I have it hooked up to ny Directv DVR I get the muted sound on the Surround modes, when I switch to my Toshiba 3600 Blue Ray the surround signal cuts out every few seconds, but plays at full volume. I pulled the receiver today and did a factory reset and checked all connections and did an auto setup withe the mike. I also prior to that unplugged the amp for 30+ minutes. I am running my components thru the amp via component cables to the monitor out, and into my Mitsibishi HDTV. The receiver has displayed a few of these problems lately but seems to be permanent now. All the connections check out. I am hoping there is a diag mode or something that can isolate the problem. The stereo mode is 2 channel and 7 channel, my set up is 7.1. If it's done I guess I would look at an rxv3800 or 1900. Thanks so much for helping.

Ignore the part about the Dvd Player, it seems that is was only a loose optical connection. That leads me to believe it's the crappy DTV DVR. I am going to call them and have them send me another, to see if that corrects the problem. This will be my second one, the last one stopped decoding HD video. I'll update after I get a new one.
Thanks
TR
