Does your reciever have auto setup?
Does your receiver have an adjustable crossover, or is it preset at 80 or so?
How many speakers do you have?
Does the sub have line level or high level inputs?
Do you have preouts on your receiver?
A couple of pointers:
- plug the ports on all your speakers with socks or similar.
- set speakers to small on the receiver if using the reciever crossover, set them to large if using the crossover on the sub.
- make sure the sub's crossover is disabled or crossed at its highest setting if using the crossover on the reciever
- place the sub in one of the front corners of the room. (or do some of the more extensive sub placement options discussed elsewhere on this site)
- ideally you would cross your speakers 1/2 octave or more above thier -3db level (if your speakers are -3db at 80 that would mean a crossover of 120, which is so high that you might be able to hear where the sub is. If so, lower the crossover until you can't hear where the sound is coming from)
- its tough to set phase correctly without an spl meter or more advanced tools.
Without knowing the answers to the above questions its hard to provide more advice than the above. Congrats on the new purchase, what sub did you buy?
