Class A/B and D together? Why not?

I have an Emotiva 2ch UPA-2 on the way, to power two full range speakers.(older preamp to use also).

I thought I would buy a 7.1 class D amp in the next year.

I would use the class D(7.1) as a preamp and the 2ch class A/B for 2ch music, and use the CL-D 7.1 for other speakers during movie watching.

What is the disadvantage to doing this? I know many 2ch music fans don’t like to do this but I dont understand why? It seems to me like the best of both worlds?

I should emphasize that my priority is 90% for 2ch for music.

Do you mean a 7.1 class d receiver?

And if so, why?

LOL!
Willis!

Anyway. I want to have the same system for 2ch Music and for movies. Is there some reason why "audiophiles" dont like to combine a 2ch and surround system?

I use my 7.1 class a/b receiver as a pre-amp. I use a separate 5-channel a/b amp to power my system.

My powered sub is class d.

I use my set-up in 2.1 for 2-channel.

Personally, I don't believe a class d receiver is the way to go.

Nope. I'd just grab a couple surrounds and a receiver. You can feed your 2ch music via the external stereo amp and use the receiver to run the surrounds. I'd skip the center unless you have specific needs for it.

I think my confusion is because I thought most or all of 5.1 or 7.1 receivers were class d

I just looked up the specs on the "HK AVR 247" , I cant find class A/B or D...
What am I missing here...

I don't believe the H/K uses class D amplification. Receivers from Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo, NAD, H/K are mostly class A/B although some of these manufactureres may offer a class D variant. Panasonic is one company that is heavy into alternate amplification classes. My 10 year old Technics incorporates class G.

Weight is a good give away for Class D amplification. The efficiencies offered by class D allows the designers to put in smaller power supplies. I'm old fashion when it comes to amplificaition and I'd rather have the inefficient Class A Class A/B amps; the ones that can dim the house lights during loudness peaks in music and movies.

Old Vintage Amp, will I break it?

I have my new speakers arriving today or tomorrow! :)

But my power amp wont be here for a few days, so I was wondering if I could use my vintage pioneer in the meantime. I dont know the model off hand but I know it is 35wpc and it says it can handle 4ohm. It is about 30 years old, is it likely to be damaged trying to push enough power for my new speakers?

I wouldn't push it hard but if the Pioneer is in good condition, it should work. What model is the Pioneer? Their receivers weren't great with low impedance loads and if it's an SX-650 or SX-680, I'd wait. They worked much better with 8 Ohms.

You bought the top of the line PSBs? Wow. Stereophile wrote a very good review of them when they first came out. I think I still have it.

Not to knock PSB (because the ones I've used have been excellent, and I've no reason to believe the current gen are not also excellent), but it seems a good Stereophile review means only that you advertise with Stereophile.

I was referring to their measurements. They measured very well. ;)

Sx 680, Psb T8, Room Acoustics

Yes, it is a SX 680 I checked pics on google. I does say it can handle 4ohm if only two speakers are hooked up, but yes it is old, It does work fine and has VERY little use (my dad bought it and used it about 1-2 hrs each week for about 7-8 years). It is driving a pair of 20 year old PSB two ways right now (one blown woofer or X-over – my mom cranks the tunes!) I just cant imagine staring at these speakers until my UPA-2 arrives!

Yes I got the Platinum T8s, I blew my budget (by 3x)for my whole system on these but my wife is a music lover too so it was not too hard of a sell (I did have to quit smoking to make this deal - 3weeks 1 day and 1.5 hrs a non smoker) :)

My brother has Sonus Faber Cremoras, it is the only stereo Ive ever heard that sounded to me "perfect". So I decided I better get some really good speakers and build a system around them in order to be satisfied with my sound.

Fedex says they are coming today or tomorrow! (255lbs total !)

I was doing some clapping, drumming, yelling in my soon to be theater room, I think it is going to work great. Ive been doing so much reading about room acoustics, wow its complicated. Im going to take up studying acoustics full-time, my current work is a tiny bit boring....Perhaps its back to university for me…?!

Yes I agree, I dont trust reviews very much. Even this site, with the adds and seeming endless positive reviews for certain products, example Emotiva; I had to check many other sites and reviews before deciding to get the UPA-2..

I think the Platium PSB series failed to sell like expected because they are not photogenic (Ive heard they look much better in person than in photographs)..I will know with about 24hrs... :)

Congrats man. Yeah the Platinum series aren't photogenic but who cares. Its all in the sound. You should comapre to your brother's speakers ..would be an interesting side project . :)

PSB T8 vs Sonus Faber Cermora

I will compare the two.

Ill post results. I know my brothers system is VERY good , but his theater room is not done yet and has some acoustic issues...
