Deftech speaker picking up an am station...

I have a fun new problem. Both of my deftech speakers (BP7004) are picking up a Spanish radio station. When I turn up the bass on the internal amplifier, you can hear the muffled station. This doesn't happen when I have the bass turned off.

After some troubleshooting I think that the speaker wire is acting like a transmitter picking up the station.

I have a warranty with BestBuy. Of course they are no help. They want me to bring in the speaker for testing. My concern is that I've had these speakers for about a year and haven't had any issues since we moved into our new home. My thought is that I'd go through the trouble with bringing it in and they would test it out in their area where it wouldn't pick up the signal.

I also wrote to Deftech. We have been communicating back and forth but also not much help. I tried other speaker wires (no difference). Moved the speaker to another room (not too much difference).

Everyone I have spoken to responds with "how strange" and "that is really weird." Not much help beyond that.

Thanks for any help you could provide.

Yes. You are in an odd situation in that you have speaker wire run (generally un-shielded) but then an amplifier afterwards.

Disconnect the speaker wire and see if the station is still there. If the station is, than the interconnect to the LFE in is your problem: replace it with one with better shielding. I suspect this will be where the problem is.

If the station goes away, than it is the speaker wire (which seems odd given the energy levels in a speaker wire: it should be inaudable). Try not using the speaker wire for the bass unit (tell the AVR that your fronts are small).

Try using the LFE input.

Greg,

Sorry to hear about this annoyance. How close do you live to a radio or TV transmitter tower? (Not that you can change it easily, just trying to identify the source.)

You may be able to work around the problem as follows below. The set-up below does not use the speakers as DT intended, but DT isn't living with an unwannted running commentary in Espanol!

It may help you to pinpoint exactly where the problem lies, and you may solve the problem with either little or no noticeable degredation in the SQ. So, I would give it a try.

1) In addition to the speaker-level wire you already have connected, also connect each 7004 to your receiver/pre-amp using the optional LFE input and with a shielded subwoofer cable. You may need a RCA Y-connector to split the sub-woofer signal to both speakers LFE inputs, if your AVR or pre-amp only has one subwoofer pre-amp output.

2) “Tell” your AVR or pre-amp bass management system that you have “SMALL” left and right front speakers and ensure “Yes” for a subwoofer.

Note: This is opposite from DT's advice in the manual, but will not harm your speakers. It just prevents the 7004's bass amplifier from receiving low-frequency signal via speaker cable, and instead routes the low-frequency signal through the AVR subwoofer output and speaker LFE input.

3) Set a bass management crossover frequency for the front speakers (nominally 80 Hz).

4) Follow the "Powering Up the Active Subwoofer Section" instructions in your 7004 manual on p. 7.

5) Use the speakers like you were before and check if the "Espanol" AM station is or is not still present. (hopefully not!) ;)

If not, this means the speaker wire was defintiely acting as an antenna, and a shielded subwoofer cable is enough to reduce or stop the intrusion.

Best of Luck,

I guess I should have peeked at the DefTec manual. From the pics on the website I assumed (stupidly) that the LFE out would already be plugged into the speaker.

Glady you clarified that. My suggestion, while the same, was not worded as sensically because of that assumtion.

JerryL,

Not stupid at all, I had to look it up since I don't own 7004s--wish I did!

Since I type so slow (just ask my text crazy daughter) I didn't even see your faster response until I hit submit.

Cheers,
